When two outsiders arrive on an isolated intentional community, seventeen-year old Anahita begins to question her role at home, and what a future out in the world-at-large could be / Duration: 85 minutes / release date: 2019 / Director: Alec Tibaldi / Piper De Palma / Free download spiral farming simulator 2017. Late Edit 12/13/2018: I wanted to make a note to reflect the new corporate rebrand to Origin House. This write up is regarding Origin House (formerly known as CannaRoyalty. Origin House and CannaRoyalty are the same company for anyone who may be confused. TLDR: CannaRoyalty is very forward thinking, more so than most companies in this sector. Their new mission and pivot in focus aligns with doing everything right, in terms of the parallels of what made American alcohol companies survive and thrive post-prohibition. In the long run, I think CannaRoyatly will be a successful company and a survivor of the green rush. They are my #1 pick in regards to the recreational side of things, at this moment. Introduction: This is a write up of CannaRoyaltys objective and the logic behind their model. As always, I am no expert but I do have some degree of knowledge. Whenever I see trending questions or curiosities here regarding something that I have a basis of knowledge on, then Ill write about it. Is this also a partial pump? Yes. I am heavily invested and believe in this company. I imagine Afzal Hasan himself would read this write up and a tear of CBD oil might shed from his eye. CannaRoyaltys Primary Objective & Differences From Other Cannabis Companies Focus on Distribution & Branding Focus on California Market Their Canadian Presence and Acquisition of 180 Smoke Can They Fulfill Their Vision? Why Are They Selling Assets? CannaRoyaltys Model As It Relates To Alcohol Prohibition Final Thoughts (1) CannaRoyaltys Primary Objective & Differences From Other Cannabis Companies CannaRoyaltys focus has always been a little different from most other companies in the sector and their mission is not exactly straightforward; for this reason, I do believe CannaRoyalty is very misunderstood. They arent boasting “x amount of grow capacity”, “x amount of grams in inventory”, or “x amount of licenses” from which you can easily compare them to their peers. They arent necessarily a vertically integrated company either. CannaRoyalty initially started out (as their name suggests) making strategic investments in various companies in the cannabis sector. Whether to take a 100% controlling interest, partial equity stake, or engage in a revenue share of research facilities, cultivators, brands, IP, etc. More info here. More recently, they have changed their model and will eventually change their company name to reflect their pivot in focus… 1. Focus on Distribution & Branding CannaRoyalty had pivoted in their mission and their primary objective it to own/dominate distribution networks and brands. They have successfully acquired distribution assets and now distribute to over 80% of dispensaries in CA. There are multiple benefits to this and this is a multi step process to fulfill their vision: Due to the fact that they dominate distribution and have this network, they can analyze the data and see which brands and products are the most successful. Eventually they will begin acquiring the most popular brands and products under their CannaRoyalty umbrella. Their distribution network can further be used to advertise and push their owned brands and likely offer special deals to vendors and keep their products on the shelves. I imagine this would almost be an spiral affect as they grow. The more products they acquire, the more shelf space they own, the more revenue/profit they make, the larger their distribution network becomes, they more they can further push their products, the more revenue/profit they make, the more brands they can acquire, etc. Their acquisitions of company's like RVR (distributor) who they just merged with did USD 27M in 2017 (35M CAD) putting them in the top 5 in terms of revenue. With more recent acquisitions such as FloraCal (brand) or their recent acquisition of 180 Smoke (retail) they are looking to incorporate millions more onto their balance sheet. So what do we take from this? Lets draw comparisons to a mature market and use alcohol as an example. Constellation Brands, Diageo, Budwieser, Molson/Coors, Heineken, etc. These are holding companies at their core and they own a plethora of brands under their umbrella, similar to what CannaRoyalty is striving to do. When you buy a bottle of Smirnoff vodka, Gordon's gin, or Captain Morgan money goes to Diageo. When you buy a six pack of Corona, Modelo, or Ballast Point money goes to Constellation Brands. Get it? Tons of different products on the shelf but they are all owned by one company. Many of these brands were at one time or another successful independent distilleries, wineries, or breweries that sold the rights to their brand and facilities to a big behemoth overseer. CannaRoyalty thinks in the long term. Why develop and market your own established products yourself when you have a much better option. Sit back and observe while 90 brands fail and 10 are successful, then buy the cream of the crop so to speak. As a metaphor, CannaRoyalty - The “Constellation Brands” of Cannabis 5 years from now. 2. Focus on California Market Ill keep this simple. California is the 5th largest economy in THE WORLD last I checked. California alone is larger than the entire Canadian market. California is a pop culture icon between music, leisure beach life, travel, partying, cannabis, etc. California is a big deal. Although having a large footprint might sound sexy “We are established in 20 different states in the US”. Having a strategic focus on a massive market is also very sexy. Not only is there a ton of money to be made but I believe there will be brands born in CA that will spread across the US, if not internationally (Whether its CannaRoyalty brands or not. Dont be so foolish as to think a strategic long term thinking management team is going to stay put in CA for long. Dominate this economy and eventually spread your seed across the US like Marc Lustig blowing a dandelion of brands across each state, filling the shelves of every dispensary. Sheer beauty right there. California is also a developed market, unlike many other states. California is a much more free market, unlike the restrictions in Canada. There have been brands in the state that have existed for years and years. There is a difference in reliable data and garbage data. If you ask one person what their favorite whiskey is and they say “Jack Daniels” well now 100% of people who drink whiskey, prefer Jack Daniels; ask a million and the statistics change. Many of these fresh new states who just passed some form of legalization are trying to figure out how many licenses to permit. They arent developed enough to get a read on which products are selling well or which brands have emerged as successful in that particular jurisdiction. In Canada, things are developing but the roll out is very slow with limitations on both products and branding/advertising; other markets may catch up or push ahead in certain ways. 3. Their Canadian Presence and Acquisition of 180 Smoke This is fresh and Im still absorbing this info. I like it so far. Take a look at this interview and this article for more information. This acquisition opens the doors for them to push their products in Canada, as well as potentially internationally, which is the most exciting (not to mention adding millions more onto their revenue. 4. Can They Fulfill Their Vision? Why Are They Selling Assets? The short answer, is yes. The long answer is also yes but with more juicy explanations from yours truly. CannaRoyalty has often spoken of their analysis of the Canadian market and they have based their model on the trends that they have seen there. Think of it as learning from others mistakes, rather than making your own. Advice? Who follows what did they see? Grow capacity was all the rage, until it wasnt. Billions of acres of grow space wont do much for you if your products arent branded/marketed well, you dont have the distribution network, or you dont have any value added products. If your brands suck. If your marketing sucks. People dont buy your product, period. This is going to become especially relevant in the coming year or two as supply meets demand. Anyone can sell weed, when there isnt enough to go around. Once supply = demand however, it becomes a race to the bottom in terms of price. Picture having the option of grabbing any beer off of the shelves that your heart desires? What do you flock to? What youre familiar with. What youre comfortable with. What offers consistent quality. What looks appealing to the eye. Branding + Marketing with a little quality/availability sprinkled in. If you dont have a distribution network, forget about it. What good is a massive warehouse of alcohol, if you dont have anyone to sell it to? Go ahead and save a few bottles for yourself because your products arent going to reach the dark side of the moon. They will remain in your own little local bubble, eventually being taken over by the well established, marketed, and growing national/international products and brands. Your massive grow farms are exactly that, farms. Lets not kid ourselves here. This is farming. Its soil. Its machinery. Its plants. Its greenhouses. Its farming. Remember your friends dad who was super rich because he owned a 50, 000 acre hop farm? I do because he always took us to McDonalds and made us order off of the value menu. He is selling his hops to a distillery, which utilitzes those hops for beer and slaps a label on the can. The product gets shipped around globally and the guy making all of the money off of the premium is our friends at Diageo. Your friends dad is competing with 50 other local farmers to grow their hops at 1 cent less per pound so they can score that sweet Diageo contract and make ends meet on the mortgage to their one bedroom farmhouse. Its a race to the bottom. (Sorry farmers out there. The insults are a joke to illustrate a point with some entertainment peppered in. Licenses were all the rage, until they werent. Its great to own the only liquor store in Los Angeles. Charge whatever you want and sell whatever you want, people dont even have a the city decides to permit 50 other individuals to open up their own liquor stores in the area. Not only does this change the market but you know that sweet permit you had before? The one your colleague was willing to pay 500, 000 for? Now its worth 10, 000 because there are a lot more of them out there. Similarities can be seen with the value of the taxi medallions that allowed you to drive a cab in New York. Those medallions are limited and valuable until Uber comes around; suddenly having the rights to drive a cab doesnt hold the same value it once did. This is the same concept as the value of branding/marketing less of something there is, the more its worth. The worst part about this in particular is that an entity you cant control (the government) can decide to greatly affect your business in an instant through changing policy and procedures. Why Are They Selling Assets? Because they changed their focus. Plain and simple. They are selling assets that no longer align with their new focus, most often to Aurora Cannabis and there may be more that will come of this relationship in the future. However, the concentration or concern around the act of selling assets isnt what you should be concentrating on as there are two things that I think are very important. First is that their ROI on the assets sold is great. This proves that their initial capital and investment into a specific asset sold was well placed. If other companies or parties are interested in buying their non-core assets at a substantial premium from what CannaRoyalty initial paid, it means it has significant value. Remember value comes at a price. These successful sales validates their ability to perform DD in recognizing value and supports their spot on long term outlook at this industry. Most importantly, this should build confidence in investors with their new pivoted approach and outlook on where the industry is headed. Second is that this is funding capital into their bank accounts. Capital that can be used to acquire more distribution networks, brands, or assets which they deem necessary to support their current mission. Cash on hand is always good and further supports their lack of necessity to dilute their stock in an effort to raise more money. As a matter of fact, they are buying back some of their own stock as they feel they are the best value in the industry at this moment in time. That on its own, speaks for itself. (2) CannaRoyaltys Model As It Relates To Alcohol Prohibition Pssst, this has happened before. Decriminalization of a product. Legitimizing an industry. Business is like war and war never changes. You might of heard of a small thing called US alcohol prohibition. Spend some time to research the parallels between cannabis and alcohol. Spend some time to research what made American spirits companies that are around, around today? What did they do right? What did the concentrate on? What actions did they take? My take from my research is that THE MOST important factors in who rose to the top and survived was those who recognized and took action towards- Branding/Marketing Distribution Networks Political Influence -In that order as well. The biggest reason I like CannaRoyalty is that they concentrate on what matters in the long run and let other operations run on their own. I dont want to invest in a chain of liquor store locations nor do I want to invest in a massive hop farm. I certainly dont want to invest in a new company thats trying to learn it all, at the same time. I actually started my own company this year and although its not the same industry, I can only to apply for licenses, buy real estate, hire/manage retail to build out grow facilities, manage distribution, hire/manage cultivation to create, establish, and market brand new brands, dispensary locations, your to manage the distribution, buy the equipment to create various cannabis derivatives, hiring specialists in certain areas to create these ntemplating the future outlook of an industry, considering competition in certain areas and amount of dispensaries, quality of product and naging capital, future raises, etc etc. The name of the game is outsource everything you can that isnt essential to your core operations or buy the assets and let them operate on their own accord. Here is a great pdf to download on the development of brands in the alcohol industry and progression over the decades. Here is an old write up I did regarding the power of branding in an emerging industry (mostly pumping Canopy. Again, another company I believe in. Want a quick rundown of what happened during alcohol prohibition? My take… Alcohol is legal again, YEAH. Everyone is buzzing and there isnt enough booze to satisfy the American thirst. US government implements large tariffs on foreign booze to support American business. There is money in alcohol so everyone and their brother starts making it and selling it. After about two years, there is enough alcohol that the supply glut is over. Supply = Demand. Consumers (now faced with a choice due to the surplus) flock to products that they are familiar with; these branded products are marketed well and come to provide a consistent quality and availability. Companies who did this, thrive. More sales = more revenue/profits = more investors = even more marketing and expansion = domination. Domination means they are buying Joe Whiskeys distillery and operations for pennies on the dollar as he is desperate with a failing business. Domination means they grow so big that they start to acquire/merge with other successful brands, expanding their footprint further. Further expansion internationally + M&A + Decades of time. You have the monsters we see today. Invest your money in companies that are ahead of the game and think of this trend while doing DD. (3) Final Thoughts Too many people on this sub take a quick glance at a company and compare them to their peers via some basic metric(s. Maybe they read a motley fool article about a company being undervalued. They might have heard from their cousin who invested in “the weed stocks” that they know a hot up and comer. CNN might of thrown an article in your face “Pot stocks soar. X company has shot up 45% in two days. ”. There is value out there but the reality is that most of companies will fail or be bought out after a significant decrease in share price. Don't drink the Koolaid of who you chose to invest in. Do your research and find the management teams that drinks the same Koolaid that you do and invest in them. Most importantly… If you failed to read my entire post in detail ONLY BECAUSE you are too lazy, your investments are in trouble. This is your hard earned money. This is also a potential ticket to a once in a lifetime investment opportunity. Dont be a fool. Fools and their money are soon separated. Learn from the experiences of others of the past. When a man with experience meets a man with money, the man with the experience walks away with the money and they man who had the money walks away with an experience. Im very excited to see where CannaRoyalty goes and they are my #1 pick in regards to the recreational side of things, at this moment. I welcome any further input, thoughts, corrections to my post, etc. Just trying to share the love for everyone else out there. Oh and buy a shit ton of my pumped stock to make me a billionaire. Go long and prosper. Late Edit 12/13/2018: I added a note to the top to reflect the corporate rebrand to Origin House.

Section One: Assets and Debt Retirement Balance (and how you got there) 114, 500 in my former companys 401k - I was there for 5 years and contributed between 3% and 6% every year. I grew my salary pretty rapidly over this time, but was aggressively paying down my student loans (more below) so I limited my 401k contributions. My former company would provide an additional part of our compensation/profit share as a contribution to our 401k, which varied every year. There was a vesting period of 5 years, so once I hit the 5-year mark, I was able to retain the full profit share contributions. My YTD rate of return is currently 13. 69. At my new company, I contribute 7% of each paycheck and my company will match up to 36, 500 for the year. I just became eligible for the 401k about two months ago, so I have roughly 2. 2k saved now. Ive also been guaranteed no less than 20k in additional contributions to the companys pension plan, but this has a 3-year vesting period so I pretend it doesnt exist right now. Equity: stares into the void] Im renting right now, and Im perfectly content to continue doing so. Ill re-evaluate after my loans are paid off. Savings/investment account balance: I have 10k in a back up savings account (I deposit 25 per week) 19k in an emergency savings account, 7, 200 in a Betterment SRI account (this fund invests in socially responsible ETFs; I deposit 100 on the 15th of each month) 2k in a Betterment High Yield savings account (it currently has a 2. 15% APY, I deposit 100 on the 1st and 15th of the month. Checking account balance: Currently 2. 7k, and I try to maintain a balance above 2k for no reason other than Im paranoid. Since I only get paid once a month, I deposit my full paycheck into my back up fund and transfer to my checking account as needed. Credit card debt: 800 for a credit card with a 16. 99% APR. This is the card I use for “big” purchases to reap miles, and I pay at least 100 every Friday. I pay off my other credit cards (two others) monthly. Student loan debt (for what degree) I have 49k left. I graduated from undergrad debt-free, through a combination of working on campus (RA = free room & board) and scholarships. Grad school (for a masters in art history and archaeology, I graduated in 2013) cost me about 140k across six loans. Ive more or less used the snowball method to pay down one account at a time. I use my annual cash bonuses to pay down big chunks. This one is the biggest loan left, with an interest rate of 7. 25. Im currently on a PAYE schedule, with 600 monthly payments. I throw basically any extra money at this loan. Car: N/A - I never learned to drive and I live in the city. Public transportation is awesome. Section Two: Income Total Income: 135k base salary, plus a discretionary annual cash bonus of no less than 20k + at least 20k to the company pension + 401k matching up to 36. 5k I was unemployed and job searching for ~8 months after grad school. I was living off the remainder of my student loans and watching the interest tick up. I finally realized that gallery/museum jobs werent going to happen for me, and I lucked into a receptionist position at a private credit investment firm. I started at 51k/year at that job and worked my way off the front desk onto the investor relations and marketing team with a salary of 120k. I left that job at the beginning of the year (it was capital T Toxic) and am now at a hedge fund where Im much happier. I feel VERY lucky. Its still weird to me that I ended up in finance as an art person - it feels like Im playing dress up every day. Main Job Take Home Pay: 6200 1x/mo - this is different from my last job, where I was paid 2x/mo. The once a month pay schedule is very anxiety inducing! Additional income/side hustle: I started making and selling ceramics/pottery this year, but Im not making a profit currently. Ive sold ~200 since July. I also have a Patreon (for ceramics and writing) from which I earn 23 /mo. I got a 150 check from our office manager the other day and apparently it was for the first few months of employments phone reimbursements. iPhone Loan: 50 (zero interest, and I have ~200 left. Doze until my alarms start going off. 7:10AM - I finally roll out of bed. I am not a morning person. Morning routine: sweep Thayers toner over my face, apply Glossier vitamin C serum, and pop in a new pair of contacts. My makeup is straightforward and all Glossier: priming moisturizer, sunscreen, foundation, Cloud Paint in storm, Lidstar in fawn, dark brown eyeliner, Lashstick. I put on an emerald green JCrew factory dress since I have to visit an important client today. I am out the door by 7:25AM. Todays music is Jenny Lewiss On the Line album. 8:11AM - Get off the subway in midtown, reluctantly putting my book away. I started reading Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi on Sunday and its heartbreakingly beautiful. I have time to grab a coffee before our daily standup at 8:30, so I stop by Blue Bottle for an expensive but delicious pour over. 4. 36 + 2 tip) 8:45AM - My boss asked me to stay back after the standup to chastise me for not answering his email over the weekend. Great way to start the day! 9:00AM - Im trying to figure out the MetroNorth schedule to get me and my boss up to our client this afternoon. Im increasingly flustered and google isnt being helpful. I realize that I forgot to take my meds this morning - combined with the coffee, Im super jittery. What a day to forget! 10:30AM - Ive gotten through a few tasks this morning so I take a moment to check to see if my landlord cashed the rent check yet. I sent it on September 27th and its now October 7th and he *still* hasnt cashed it… He does this every month and its maddening. I schedule some credit card payments and pull a Luna Bar (chocolate peppermint) out of my drawer to see if some food in my stomach will make me less jittery. 10:56AM - I download the MetroNorth apps and buy my ticket ahead of time (nonpeak, 12. 75, expensed. I am anxious about traveling with my boss and already feel wrong-footed with him today, so I am extra paranoid that things will go wrong. I end up buying a ticket for him too (another 12. 11:41AM - I run downstairs to the Maison Kayser next to my office to grab a croissant sandwich to tuck into my purse ( 8. 66. I dont trust that Im going to be able to get something at Grand Central before our train, even though my boss thinks otherwise. 12:06PM - End up eating my sandwich. I grab a packet of sunchips from the office pantry to go with it. No ragerts. 12:25PM - Our portfolio manager asks if I have everything I need for another big clients request. I sure dont! But my boss interrupts because he has decided its time to leave. On the walk to Grand Central, I shoot off several emails to my teammates to make sure theyre able to finish off the request in time without me. 1:00PM - Were seated on the train, lattes in hand (boss put it on his card. I answer emails and read more of Homegoing on the ride. 2:18PM - We have to transfer to a bus? My boss is not happy. 3:05PM - Were an hour early, which is much better than being late, but it means we get to awkwardly sit in the lobby for a while. I plug in my phone for some extra juice and pick up Homegoing again. 4:00PM - The talk begins. I hold my breath and hope my boss doesnt put his foot in his mouth. 5:00PM - It wasnt horrible! Happy hour with the clients employees before we head out to dinner. I chat with a nice guy who is actually based in the city. Hes pretty cool. We make plans to meet up in the city so he can see our (admittedly gorgeous) offices. 6:15PM - Dinner at a local farm to table place (boss pays, no clue about the cost) with two of our coverage folks from this client. The women are super nice and I wish my boss would let them have a word in edgewise. He is painfully sales-y and it drives me crazy. The food is excellent though - I have cavatelli with sausage (24. and a really nice red wine that the boss picks out. No dessert: 8:01PM - We RUSH from the restaurant in pouring rain to the train station. We make the train with maybe 30 seconds to spare. I buy us both tickets on the app (23, expensed. I have to pee so bad. Are there bathrooms on the MetroNorth trains? 8:12PM - I found a bathroom. It was pretty gross. Im looking forward to a shower when I get home. 8:47PM - My boss has taken off his shoes and put his feet on the seat in front of us… 9:16PM - Made it to Grand Central. Now to catch a subway, then a transfer - Ill be home in about an hour. 9:30PM - A kid comes down the car selling Welchs fruit snacks, two for a dollar. I buy myself some dessert ( 1. I eat one of them immediately. Its no warm skillet cookie, but Im a sucker for gummy snacks. 9:45PM - My transfer is 10 minutes away. I eat my second packet of fruit snacks on the platform. 10:05PM - My train has been “arriving in 1 minute” for a good ten minutes now. 10:15PM - A woman definitely just used the MTA help point to complain about the train delay. 10:20PM - The train is here. 10:35PM - Make it from the station to my building! I grab a package from the package room (cat food. Upstairs, my whiny baby C (cat) runs from my room to greet me. It sounds like my roommates are asleep. I skirt around my cat and rush to get into the shower. I rub the Ordinary Squalane cleanser on my face while the water heats up, then rinse and cleanse again with Glossiers cleanser. I wash all over with Loccitaine almond scented shower oil (a true indulgence) and rinse off in record time. I take off the rest of my make up with Glossier stuff, wipe my face with Thayers toner, and apply the Ordinary niacinamide serum. Brush my teeth and try to open the box of cat food at the same time. I am not that dexterous. I scoop up my roommates cat D to check her into Cat Hotel (my bathroom) for the night. She has a scratching post, a litter box, a soft bed, and water to get her through the night. Otherwise she wakes us up at 4AM by destroying the doors to our bedrooms. She has come to accept Cat Hotel, mostly. I blitz through the rest of my nighttime skincare, take two gummy melatonin, and put a dropper full of CBD oil under my tongue. Im in bed by 11. Its past my bedtime, but Im still going to read a bit. Im halfway through Homegoing! Day 1 Spend: 16. 02. 48. 50, expensed) Day Two: Tuesday 6:40AM - My first alarm goes off, and it feels like I just fell asleep. Todays going to be rough. 7:10AM - Manage to actually haul myself out of bed. Same morning routine, this time I remember to take my meds. C comes and watches me do my make up, but runs away when I try to pet her. I wonder what goes through her little walnut brain sometimes. Im out the door a little behind schedule but still before 7:30AM! Todays music is the Westworld (season 1) soundtrack. 7:40AM - Okay, what is with my subway line? The sign says the next train is 15 minutes away. Highly unusual, very annoying. I read Homegoing while I wait. 8:25AM - I get off the subway in midtown, and I realize Im going to be late for the 8:30 stand up. I make pretty good time and get to the office only three minutes late. Unfortunately, todays meeting is in the boardroom, so I get to walk past everyone on my way in. 8:45AM - The COO corners me after the meeting and talks me through his game plan for tackling a rather tardy project today. Its something I was working on in fits and spurts all summer long, but its a tedious thing that nobody ever actually wants to look at. Surprise, a client asked for it (I told everyone we needed to do it…) and now its an emergency. I make a cup of tea, grab a Luna Bar out of my desk, and settle in for a rough day. 9:44AM - I make a cappuccino with the office coffee machine. Its… not great. Also, I burn my tongue. 10:16AM - I place a salad order for pick up at 12:30 on the Sweetgreen app ( 14. 10. I have never successfully managed to bring lunch to work, and I rarely order dinner out, so I dont feel (too) bad ordering lunch at work. 10:34AM - This day is crawling by and I dont know how Im going to make it. Im so exhausted. 11:53AM - After a call with a new service provider, me and one of the marketers, E, stay in the conference room to vent about the management team. She and I joined around the same time and we really dont like being micro-managed. It feels good to get some of that off my chest. 12:10PM - Step out to pick up my salad. I walk out with E and we vent some more. Turns out, were both increasingly annoyed by our other (male) teammates unfortunate habit of taking credit for our work. We part ways and I go pick up my salad. Im feeling pretty down today - I know that stress/exhaustion plays into the depression a lot, but its hard to control. I want nothing more than to go home and take a nap on the couch, preferably with a cat or two. Instead, I take the long way around the park back to the office and stop in at Blue Bottle for a scone and a latte ( 9. 53 + 2 tip. Hopefully the caffeine will keep me fortified through my client meeting this afternoon. 2:18PM - This is the worst time of day. Also, I swear my office crush walks past my desk when I am in the most unflattering of poses. This time, I was slumped down in my seat, chewing on my cuticles. Cute. 2:45PM - Does anyone get work done after lunch? Like, legitimately? Who are these people? I have to survive until my meeting at 3:30PM. 2:59PM - My boss is shaving at his desk. 3:27PM - A woman calls with a question about her recently-late fathers account. Im not entirely sure what her question is, and its almost like she just needs someone to vent to. I try to tease out some details when my client meeting walks in. I wrap up the call as quickly and politely as I can before I run into that client meeting. 5:24PM - Meeting over. Life has drained from my body. I eat my scone from earlier. 5:53PM - I decide to leave. I have a four hour meeting in the morning and theres nothing I can really do to prepare for it. As Im leaving, I get a text from A. It turns out, she took D to the vet because she was acting strange (the cat, not the roommate. I was going to go to the studio, but now it looks like I might have to swap coverage with her. My other roommate B (her bf, and my original roommate) chimes in to say hes on his way. Great! I get on the train and head towards the studio. 6:15PM - Except it turns out I got on the wrong train and now Im on the other side of Brooklyn. What is it with my luck this week? I get off the train, switch back to a northbound, then walk across Barclays to change trains. At this point, I decide Im not going to the studio. Im too stressed and need to just veg out at home. 6:45PM - I stop in at the corner store to pick up the essentials: apples, cheez-itz, a six pack of beer, and a pint of ice cream ( 29. 13. 7:00PM - Im home. I start to feed C, and then I hear my roommates coming down the hall. D is (probably. fine! The vet thinks its probably stress from the people across the hall (there were a lot of moving noises and a new dog neighbor, too) but it might be a UTI. Shes got some meds - a pill and some liquids. B leaves for his class, leaving me and A to give D the meds. Fortunately, D is a freak and will just straight up eat the pills if you put it in the general vicinity of a treat. The liquid stuff is harder - I burrito her in a towel and A squirts it into her mouth. Relatively painless, all things considered! I toast an egg everything bagel left over from the weekend. scallion cream cheese) grab a beer, and eat at my desk in my room while watching the third season of True Detective. 8:40PM - I watch the first episode, have a little bit of ice cream (peppermint patty from a local place, but it wasnt doing it for me, so I switched to Phish Food) and play some Stardew Valley. I get through one day on the farm before I decide I dont have the patience and boot up Overwatch instead. I unironically love playing support. 10:10PM - Winding down for bed. I make a cup of sleepy time tea and start taking off my makeup (this time with a Cerave wipe. Wash my face, usual nighttime stuff. 10:30PM - In bed. I read a bit more of Homegoing and then roll over to sleep. Day 2 Spend: 54. 76 Day Three: Wednesday 6:00AM - Im awake but I dont want to be. I try dozing until my alarms go off. 7:10AM - Up and at ‘em. C is trying to convince me she hasnt been fed yet, but I know better than to fall for her tricks. I put the kettle to boil for coffee and go through the usual morning routine, this time wandering between my room and the kitchen to pour water over coffee grounds. Out the door by 7:25AM, coffee in hand. Todays music is Hoziers Wasteland Baby album. I finish Homegoing on the train. Highly recommend. 8:30AM - Morning stand up. I have a client meeting scheduled for four hours this morning and Im really not looking forward to it. This week has been unusually client meeting heavy and its hard to be “on” when Im mentally having a hard time. 8:45AM - My client is half an hour early for our four hour meeting! Ive only eaten half of my Luna Bar! This should be illegal! 12:00PM - Good news: the client wrapped up the meeting early. Bad news: its raining and I didnt order my lunch ahead. I dawdle at my desk, scrolling through Twitter, undecided about what I want to eat. 12:40PM - Im hungry enough that I cant sit and mindlessly scroll any longer. Its still raining though, so I just run downstairs and duck into Maison Kayser again. I get a warm ham and cheese croissant ( 6. 80) to eat at my desk. 3:07PM - Late for a call with a client. My boss chews me out. Im really off my game this week. 5:06PM - I cave and eat a bag of chips from the office kitchen. 5:45PM - I head home. I make sure that the train Im getting on is the right one before I start reading The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai. 6:38PM - Home, both roommates are out. I feed the cats (D only gets wet food, vets orders. I *should* work out but Im wrung out. Some pictures from a friends recent wedding made me feel very bad about my body, but somehow its not enough to get me down to the gym. Whatever. I reheat some soba noodles with brussels sprouts and broccoli from the other day. I eat at my desk watching another episode of True Detective. C comes to sit in my lap for a while. 8:00PM - I decide to play a couple rounds of Overwatch. 10:00PM - Oops. A couple rounds turned into a couple of hours. Time for bed time routine. I boil some water to make a cup of sleepy time tea. B is sitting on the kitchen floor with D in his lap; D is high as hell. The vets got her on the good stuff, I guess. 10:15PM - Melatonin gummies. Brush teeth. Double cleanse with the Ordinary and Glossier, apply Thayers toner, then the Ordinary Niacinamide. The rest of my night time skin care: pure aloe vera (does it do anything? idk! It feels nice) Laneige water sleep mask, Bite agave lip balm. Read a bit more of The Great Believers before I sleep. Day 3 Spend: 6. 80 Day Four: Thursday 6:00AM - No, please. 7:10AM - Get up, morning routine. I dont make coffee ‘cause Im not feeling it (and I didnt wash my tumbler from yesterday. Out the door. This morning Im listening to the Pride & Prejudice (2005) soundtrack. 7:25AM - Refill my MetroCard for another month (127, pre-tax. 8:15AM - Get to work and make a cup of tea (I keep tea bags in my desk drawer) before morning stand up. Relieved that the boss man is working remotely today. I should note that hes been unusually crabby this week. He is also - BY FAR - less toxic than my previous boss. It got to the point at my last job that I could not have a conversation with my old boss without crying. I was crying at work almost every day. For whatever reason, I dont have the same emotional reaction with my new boss as I did with my last boss. Its stressful when hes crabby, but I dont take it nearly as personally. 9:00AM - Eat the other half of my Luna Bar from yesterday. I realize I left my studio clothes at home, and I really meant to go to the studio today. Ugh. I guess Ill work out later instead. UGH. 10:30AM - Got out of yet another client meeting. I was going to order Cava for lunch, but the pick up times were all booked until after 1PM. I order a salad from Sweetgreen instead (guacamole greens minus chicken. I have a 9 credit so my salad costs 1. 34. 12:00PM - I pick up my salad. I debate whether I want a pastry from Maison Kayser, but ultimately decide against it. 12:42PM - I have six peanut M&Ms from the dispenser in the office kitchen. Im glad it only dispenses a scant handful at a time to be honest… 1:10PM - Duck out for my weekly therapy appointment. Ive been struggling with depression since grad school, but only really sought treatment in the last few years. Therapy has been an incredible help in a lot of ways. My therapist is also 1000% awesome. 2:15PM - Mm. Mixed feelings coming out of this session (250, charged monthly. Weve talked about the possibility that my brand of depression is “drug resistant, ” which is a super cool thing to hear. My therapist reminds me frequently that theres still a lot of options out there. The treatment we talked about today costs 14k. Not sure thats right for me! 2:20PM - On my way to the subway I stop by Starbucks for a hot chocolate (4. 30, but I had money on the app already. Comfort in a cup. 5:23PM - The sun is reflecting off a building across from mine and hitting me directly in the eye. Im calling it a day. 6:24PM - Stop at Duane Reade to pick up some dishwasher detergent and two packs of Cerave face wipes. Theyre buy one get one half off. 22. 29) 6:44PM - Get home, take the pizza dough out of the fridge and drag myself downstairs to do a 30 minute Peloton cycling class on the app. It actually feels. good? Afterwards, I shower and wash my hair (Living Proof is amazing. Ill let it air dry and tame it before bed. 8:00PM - Prep toppings while the oven heats up. When the oven reaches 500 degrees, I slide the pie in. 5 minutes bake, 3 minutes broil. I clean up while it bakes. I manage not to set the fire alarm off! 8:20PM - Just kidding. Fire alarm goes off after I have removed my pizza and shut the door. My anxiety skyrockets. 8:30PM - Eat my pizza (its delicious) and watch some more True Detective. 9:00PM - Idly browse designer purses on I really want a designer bag, though I cant really say why. But also spending 2500 on a purse seems… ill advised. They sure are pretty though. 9:15PM - The Organization of Transformative Works is having a membership drive, so I set up a monthly donation of 25. I write a ton of fanfic and Archive of Our Own is an amazing service. I also tweet asking if any of my followers want a fic in exchange for an AO3 donation. I do this periodically - this year, I think Ive raised close to 750 for a few different charities via fanfic commissions. Its a small thing but every bit helps! 9:45PM - Put some Oribe heat protectant in my hair before I blow dry it a little, just to get it less damp underneath. C always sits behind me and watches me blow dry - I think she likes the warm air? Little weirdo. I have a lot of hair, and typically only wash it twice a week because its always an ordeal. Its still not dry from my shower earlier. Once its reasonably dry, I make a cup of sleepy time tea, put on an old season of RuPauls Drag Race on in the background, and sit in front of my mirror to curl my hair into submission. 10:15PM - Finish up the rest of my night time routine, throw my clean hair into a bun and crawl into bed. I read a bit more of The Great Believers before I go to sleep. Day 4 Spend: 48. 63 Day Five: Friday 6:40AM - I debate whether or not I could get away with going to work late this morning… I feel a migraine coming on. 7:10AM - Im up. Morning routine. I spend longer than usual trying to figure out what to wear - I could almost get away with a turtleneck today, so I try a soft white one I bought last year from Madewell. It sort of fits, but I sure was optimistic when I ordered a small. I swap it out for a sweater with a beaded collar from Zara. Out the door by 7:30AM. Im listening to Heather Maloney and Darlingsides Woodstock EP. 8:10AM - I debate whether I want a coffee this morning or not. The lure of Blue Bottle is strong, though. I get a latte ( 5. 44 + 2 tip. I also stop by Maison Kayser on the way in to buy a mini monge with butter ( 1. 20) since Im out of Luna Bars. 8:54AM - My firm has a charitable giving matching program. I shoot off a question to see if I can add up my monthly donations for the firm to match. 9:22AM - The office is super quiet today. I didnt realize it was a long weekend! Apparently we follow the bond markets calendar. This transforms my entire day. 9:50AM - Place my lunch order - today I get myself a greens and grains bowl from Cava. I have a credit, so my bowl is only 4. 80! 12:15PM - Literally what did I do all morning? I go pick up my lunch. On the way back, I stop by Muji to ogle office supplies but I manage not to buy anything. I also swing by Starbucks for a English Breakfast tea latte and a packet of madeleines (7. 84, prepaid on the app. 1:08PM - My head is really starting to hurt but I cant take anything stronger than Tylenol due to a blood condition. 1:44PM - I actually do some work today and answer some emails I was avoiding. I also work on the quarterly investor letter for one of our products. The letter covers investment updates which I source from the investment guys and then translate into intelligible English. I have had zero formal finance training, which is actually perfect for this role, since I do a lot of translating from iBro speak into plain English. If I can understand it, anyone can. Just dont ask me to do mental math. 1:55PM - Ooh, one of the artists I follow on Instagram is having a special edition sale next week. The holographic prints would be 600, but ship for free and are already framed. Im really, really tempted. Ive been wanting to create a gallery wall above my headboard. Im glad I have a week to sit on this. 2:38PM - Worked myself into a depression spiral thinking about my mental health options. I dont cry at my desk but its a near thing. 4:00PM - A bunch of people left already, so Im out of here! 4:50PM - Im home, and its before 5PM so Im taking a nap. 6:30PM - I drag myself out of bed. It was not a good nap; at some point my roommates came home and used the blender and made some other noises that were particularly loud. Its fine. 7:00PM - I make some polenta and a tofu “bolognese” for dinner. I crumble up the tofu and saute it with onions and garlic. I season it, add some pureed tomato sauce, and let it simmer. Finish off with a pat of butter and a few dashes of worcestershire sauce. I top the polenta with a generous amount of parmesan and the fauxlognese. I sit at my desk with a beer and watch the rest of season 3 of True Detective. 8:00PM - I spend the rest of the night playing Stardew Valley and dicking around on the internet. 12:30AM - So sleepy. Time for bed. Day 5 Spend: 13. 44 Day 6: Saturday 4:00AM - Wake up very confused. I go pee (D, in Cat Hotel, dislikes the interruption of her slumber) and knock back out. 10:30AM - My alarm goes off but Im not feeling it. Go back to dozing. 12:00PM - Hm. I should probably get out of bed. I end up staying in bed for another hour, scrolling through Twitter and Instagram. 1:00PM - I finally get up and make myself a cup of coffee. I debate whether or not I want to order a sausage egg and cheese from the bagel shop up the street. I eventually do place an order, which is immediately cancelled. Welp! Its a sign. 2:00PM - I do need a carb of some description, though, and I decide I want to make muffins. I get dressed and wander up to the corner store for milk, strawberries, heavy cream, eggs, and I throw in a corn muffin mix too ( 24. 24. A texts me to ask for me to pick up some paper towels, so I walk a few more blocks to CVS to pick up a big pack of paper towels and trash bags ( 28. 29. 2:30PM - Home, unpack groceries, start heating up the oven for the corn muffins. I mix up the batter and get the muffins baking. I eat an apple in the meantime. 15 minutes later and theyre out of the oven. I “test” one almost immediately, splitting it in half and putting a pat of butter down on one side, strawberry jam on the other. Delicious. I eat two more. 3:30PM - More Stardew Valley. I should probably go to the studio. 5:40PM - I definitely did not go to the studio and I definitely continued playing Stardew Valley all afternoon. Saturdays tend to be the days that I let myself do nothing. Im working on not feeling guilty about it. My best friend F tells me that theres a game called Surviving Mars free on the Epic Games store. I go download it because a) free and b) it actually looks interesting. 7:00PM - I saute some broccoli and put it on top of some of the leftover polenta. I start watching The Fall on Netflix and Im immediately hooked. Gillian Anderson is so beautiful. 12:40AM - I… hm. I guess I played Stardew Valley and watched The Fall all night. To be fair, I seem to have done some laundry as well, so I wasnt completely useless today. Time for bed? I read a little bit of The Great Awakening before I pass out. Day 6 Spend: 52. 53 Day Seven: Sunday 10:30AM - My alarm goes off but I dont get up immediately. In fact, I doze off again. 11:30AM - I get out of bed (“early” for weekend me) and go make some coffee. I have, er, three corn muffins too. I finish season one of The Fall and start season two. 2:00PM - Okay, time to be productive. I get dressed and head to the studio. 2:43PM - I stop by Starbucks on the way to pick up an iced venti green tea (3. 54, prepaid on my card. The studio is busy but I find a wheel in the members space and sit down with some fresh white stoneware. I need to make some mugs and pet bowls today. I put my headphones (Im listening to old episodes of the Criminal podcast) in and get cracking. 4:30PM - That was so satisfying. I wire off four mugs and three bowls and clean up. I almost always feel better when Im at the wheel - its just making myself leave the apartment that takes the most effort. On my way home, I stop by a local ice cream shop to pick up a pint of ice cream and I large cup of cookie dough for the road ( 16. 57. This has become an unfortunate habit after I leave the studio. I eat my ice cream slowly as I wander through the neighborhood to my subway stop. 5:00PM - I play through the Surviving Mars tutorials and, oh no, Im hooked. 6:45PM - I wasnt going to, but nothing in my fridge was calling to me, so I put in an order of curry and spring rolls from a local Thai place ( 23. 14. I go back to my Martian colony. 7:30PM - A break from surviving to eat dinner and watch more of The Fall. This series is so good but its leaving Netflix on 10/29. Its short and bingeable! Watch it! 1:00AM - Ha ha, um. I spent the rest of the night playing Surviving Mars. Im really, really glad tomorrow is an off day for me. I neglect my evening skincare and fall into bed. I dont read at all before I fall asleep. Day 7 Spend: 39. 71 Weekly Total: 231. 89. 48. 50, expensed) Food & Drink: 156. 31 Fun/Entertainment: 0 Health: 0 Clothes & Beauty: 0 Home: 50. 58 Transport: 48. 50, expensed Other: 25. 00 Reflections This feels like a low spend week for me. I think its because it was the week before I got paid, so I was feeling particularly paranoid about my bank account balances and trying not to spend on frivolous things. I tend to mull over purchases for a long time before I hit the button, anyway. I have decided that I *will* be buying that art piece (today. if Im able to snag it! I am not at all surprised that I spend the bulk of my money on food. I would usually spend more on this category for sure. It just so happened that my credits lined up just right this week - I use the apps so that I can get some money back and alleviate my guilt. I just know Im never going to pack my lunch. I do enjoy cooking dinner, though, so the Thai food was a rare treat. I was super busy/stressed/depressed this week, but otherwise it was pretty typical. I usually try to get to the studio more often, though. I finished The Great Believers today and holy shit. It was so good. Please read it. In case you were wondering, my landlord did eventually cash my rent check sometime in the middle of the week.

I remember that meme with Jonathan Pryce, The first day of the month and last day of the month after getting paid. I wonder if the casting was made based on that meme. “Intelligence, Courage, Stamina, And Heart, Osborne! First, we go for his heart! ”. [Transcribed from the dictaphone of Flynn VanDeBerg, during his investigation into a murder of a man who's body was dumped in the mangroves of a rural Australian Town] Chapter One. Girl, Birthmark' It's with lamentation and sorrow, that I officially begin this auditory/literary investigation into the mysterious death of Jeremy Scarborough; who had his skin carefully stripped from his flesh and muscles extracted with a hunting knife, and was subsequently dumped in the mangroves at Green Gill's river. I'm recording, in spit of goose pimples, in my dressing gown, cicada's clicking like a wave, across the black stretch of space; a hot, Australian sky, tall-black grass blowing in the breeze. The glistening stars of the Milky Way; as clear as a river of light above me. Country stars. To a soundtrack the croaking of frogs fall out of step with the cicadas melody. There's so much disorder in the outback. It's so rustic. somehow even amidst the random beauty of the Australian bush, natures chaotic rythym seems to have. some unknown deeply disturbing meaning to convey to whoever is willing to listen. Seems to be Working. Grammatically it's good, and the punctuation is spot on. I'm a little apprehensive. When I discovered the dictaphone feature in 'HypeWriter' the writers application I downloaded a few months ago, I had low expectations of the method surpassing conventional typing, as a preference for my writing. There's no doubt it's accurate, but there's a kind of shroud- a concern over integrity. I'm worried about editing the words, in case I lose my candid voice. That kind of infects the usual methods and professional standard of the medium. All the same... It's a lot more personal, I almost feel like I'm speaking straight to my readers this way, as my lips hover over my mobile phone in the onyx coloured night, too pretentious? I would normally edit that out, but now I'm not sure. The dictaphone doesn't pick up the chirping in the background, which is lucky. The cicada's have been leaving their crusty brown shells everywhere on the frames of my new residence, must be the season of the damn things. I'm picking one up in my hand, right now, plucking it off the splintered, wooden railing; it's sticky, like the skin of a dried fruit, it's legs are sharp and stick into the callus on my fore-finger. Ouch. I've had the most pervasive sense of dread since I've come to this place. I don't know what it is. I used to feel misgiving putting honest words down on a page after a haunting or traumatic incident, but recording my voice, and having it instantly translated into words is somehow even more daunting. I'm feeling existential, alone in the dark, a little paranoid, listening to the sound of my own voice echo through the desolate valley. Then there were the incidents. I'm supposed to give some character description about myself for depth, I guess, as an introduction, how about. if I read you my bio off the dust jacket of my last book, it's sitting right here on the divan next to me, here let me turn the porch light on. There; in bleak typography, if you were here you might read the title 'The Koala Killer' and an abstract red, clownish bear face, channelling Ralph Steadman, Gerald scarfe, and in the 'd see the portrait photo of me. Short curly brown hair. Thick rimmed Glasses. Handsome. Ha. A pointy, angular face. let's see. Flynn VanDeBerg is a stoic Australian writer who. Stoic. in case you can't tell I didn't write the inset biography myself. a writer, into the unfashionable medium of the occult like a knife. His bold prose. OK. I won't bore you with the rest of that nonsense. Any fool can arrange sentences, I'm not into the more pretentious, self-aggrandising aspects of the trade. That is the reason I'm out in this obscure outback town though. That's my trade. I write about ' the occult' don't back off just yet, the word simply means 'what is hidden' I'm not a conman, not dogmatic, or conspiratorial- though sometimes my work can be pretty trite, my investigations at least aim to be candid, honest. The subject remains a niche area of interest, marketable, even if it often seems to run hand in hand with charlatanry and pseudoscience, there are unexplainable forces out there. I know that much. I get paid to distribute my writings online, so long as I mention 'Black-lab' publishing house, shameless plug there you are, I sense you're judging me, but we all have to earn a crust, don't we? Actually I couldn't be more grateful to Vicky, my publisher, they're paying me to develop my own set of Tarot cards this year, with a unique Australiana theme, it's a fascinating project, alongside that- they paid for free accommodation for my six month stay in 'Bishop's Valley. That's this small, rural Australian town about a third of the distance between Sydney and Melbourne. I've got a nice set-up here, a beautiful old, free standing house with a patio and a deck, which I moved into today, hence the welcome croaking symphony of the cicadas. Bishop's Valley library is supposedly one of the better libraries in the state of New South Wales for Australian specific phenomenon and history, so I'll be researching over the next few weeks and finalising the tarot deck with my artist colleague via the Internet. The tarot deck will be marketed as a promotional bonus alongside an anthology of BL writers work. I'm actually pretty excited about the whole thing, a tad jittery and nervous. Perhaps that's to be expected. I'm not married, and I have no children, so travelling around the country is ideal for me. I like people, I like to meet people I mean, i'm more studious than social, truth be told. I like to study people, observe them, make mental sketches, y' my writing- Hmmm- The girls light is still on... on the hill. How intriguing. She was. Intriguing... Sorry. Trying to remain linear for your sake. Back on topic. The purpose of this journal is to document my experiences here for the anthology. I only arrived today so I'm pretty tired, but it's probably better to reflect on the day while it's all still fresh in my mind. I pulled off the Hume Highway at. about 7:30, after driving for seven uncomfortable hours. Then I started the long descent into Bishop's valley, down 'the forward way. The moment you get off the highway you notice the lack of council work in the district. The old roads in this part of the country havent been tarred since the 80s, they're bumpy, with lots of holes, very gravelly, sometimes they aren't even roads, they're just scattered piles of rocks. On the rough road into the place, you are also treated to the awe inspiring sight of that unique Australian bush land, the sparse and bent, bracken trees along the way, gnarled stones and branches of heaven slanted, miles of red dust, road kill and skeletons of dead animals. I couldn't help but feel a kind of bad omen, or premonition as I was driving in, kicking up dust, looking at the haunting slice of spiritus Mundi carved into the landscape all around me. It's actually overwhelming to finally set eyes upon the soil here, seeing as I've been doing my own research on the place for weeks now. The Indigenous people of this land inhabited the area now known as Bishops Valley for at least 6, 000 years prior to European arrival, so i've read. The Warriwul people had a recognised camping ground where tribes gathered annually to fish and hunt wallabies, dingoes and bandicoots. According to photographs I've seen in books, there are historical signs of the Warriwul people from Muro-vale down to the shores of Green-Gill River, including; rock shelters, rock carvings and cave paintings, particularly in the Western bushlands. It's going to be great to actually see some of these historic sites in person when I start exploring. One particular interesting rock painting I'd really like to see, is in a cave site near Yalumba basin, it's about five kilometres from my house, and it's known colloquially as ‘The crown of the shadow king. I've only seen a couple of blurry photos but according to sources it depicts a curious silhouette of a giant man, surrounded by adoring tribe members - who are placing a crown of stars upon his head, some representation of tribal initiation no doubt. In any case the painting indicates a rich artistic tradition for the Warriwul people and their 'dream time' legends. I was thinking about all these things as I drove through Murro-vale earlier today. History was dancing on the edge of my imagination, fresh in my mind from research. I could imagine how the first Europeans felt, tramping through here, actually; in terms of the natural landscape not much has changed since then. It was the explorer and ex-convict John Goldlook, who obtained permission from governor Hunter to explore this area for the first time, with a small party; back in 1796, alerting the officials to the large river and mangroves at the basin of the valley. The mangroves, in fact, are a mere stones throw from the house I'm staying in. The river was apparently named 'Green Gills' river after the unfortunate death of one member of the expedition. John Harp, who was found face down in the river, laying in the water - also less than five hundred metres down the old bush path which runs from my backyard- apparently drowned or poisoned, they say he was quite pale and off coloured when he was found, hence came the name ‘green gills from the colloquial Aussie expression, likening the dead man to a rotting fish. I was almost disappointed to learn this fact, my initial thought on hearing the name 'Green Gills River' was that it may have been the home of a friendly green troll named Gill. But there you are, the truth is more gruesome than fiction. Governor Macquarie granted Lord Havelsby 3, 000 acres of land here in 1819 and put him in charge of developing an arterial road. That was 'the forward way' which I drove down this afternoon. The first landowner in Bishops valley was Captain Errol Flinders, who named his farm ‘Chapel of the new sun, using convict labour to run the farm, eventually sold in 1816. There was a fair amount of livestock here in the early days. Over 25 years from 1790, many other farms were built, and a great deal of timber cutting in the region began, it was particularly a hot spot for the popular 'Blakeleys red gum' timber. As most provincial towns, the place was marred by tragedies of all sorts, a bushfire killed half the town's population in the early 19th century, and there was even a rather unusual outbreak of leprosy in the 1830's. By 1836 many convicts had been granted land to farm. Hans and Eileen Webster purchased a large plot of land along what would become Prime Street in 1938, The main commercial street in Bishops Valley. The area became renowned for its cultivation of onions, due to the rare red soil, and was frequently attacked by raiding bush rangers, thieves and tribes people in the early years (for vegetables and livestock. John Bowman surveyed the entire area in 1832, calling it 'a paradise' and settlements also began on the two nearby areas at the twin mountain bases- in Murro-Vale and Oper-Bodie, which would become the more industrialised towns; as the region developed. I only got a short look at Oper-Bodie on my way in today, and will hopefully return there in coming weeks. But from what I saw of Murro-Vale it's a pretty ugly steelworks town. I had reservations driving through there at all, based on the looks of some of the frightening ocker townsfolk. From what I can discern from history books and early writings Murro-Vale was a popular stop in point for migrators and travellers, the BlackGum Hotel was a favourite stopping place for Cobb and Co coaches which travelled down that way. Murro Vale was also a refuelling place for locomotives on their way from Sydney to Melbourne, and thus did attract many nefarious types fleeing Sydney to escape criminal charges. Lots of mafia and underworld figures hailed from Bishop's Valley back in the day. Murro Vale also happened to be very close to the path of the famous explorer Hamilton Hume, who's great expedition would become the path of the future Hume Highway, the main roadway from Melbourne to Sydney; this no doubt aided the areas industrial growth - and explains its unique modern ugliness. The steelworks, engineering works and coal trade all thrived in Murro-vale. Coal mining went through a surge in the 1850s, with established mines in Oper-Bodie, and Bishops Valley, copper and asbestos mining also achieved success, BHP steelworks had a factory there from 1920. Since the steelworks closing in Murro Vale in the 1990s the whole region has apparently been forced to reevaluate its employment and industry options, which to be honest I have no idea how they're managing. It will be interesting to analyse in coming months. Murro-Vale developed the first police Barracks and post office over a hundred and fifty years ago which served most of the surrounding area well enough, although the Bishops Valley private police unit, ‘Blue boys have maintained a healthy power ever since, which is entirely strange under Australian law, and I'm also shocked, keen to uncover the facts of how Bishop's Valley has somehow managed to evade Australia's heavy gun laws, housing the widest array of private guns I've heard of in this country. There's even a double barrelled shotgun hung neatly above the open fireplace in my temporary abode. I checked to see if it was loaded, dumbstruck to find it was, later finding a gun cupboard packed with cases of shells. I was quite happy to pass through Murro-Vale this afternoon, and come down the windy 'Serpentine road' that leads to Prime Street, Bishop's Valley. The bushland on the mountains to the West and East of Murro-vale and Oper-Bodie are said to be largely unexplorable, they appear as strikingly beautiful purple mountains as you drive past. The bushland was labelled a national park in 1879, but was reverted to private ownership in 1890, to the 'Cathar Council' another curious fact I noticed in my research. There seems to be a deep religious current to the history of Bishop's Valley. A Catholic church was established in the region as early as 1821. Quickly a significant clerical community identified it as a point of organisation for the holy orders in other parts of Australia. Cardinal DelSoire built a large manor house on Fruitbat Road, having the rather conservative belief that Australia should continue along feudal Catholic lines, with the helm right here; he named the manor ‘Cardinal House, and it apparently still stands today, though I've not yet seen it. The area was originally called ‘Bishops head in 1867, but was for some reason renamed ‘Bishops Valley in 1955 evidently influenced by the clerical community here, though I've not yet been able to pin down the exact etymology of the name. I gather much has changed here from the older days, and there is not a great deal of information on modern life in the small town. The recession of the 1880s caused great problems and unemployment in Bishop's Valley, then bishop's head) with a number of families having to leave on mass exodus. Roads connecting Murro-vale, Oper Bodie, and Bishops head were built by a convict chain gang, these roads included ‘Forward Way and ‘Serpentine Road. A bridge at Serpentine road was also constructed back in those early years, leading onto Prime Street, as the centre of the town. As I drove over the bridge, I was surprised to find my old Ford Fairlane nearly lost it's grip running over the rickety wooden slabs, and I wondered if the towns folk didn't need a four wheel drive to manoeuvre safely along these wild outback roads. My suspicions were later to be confirmed. As you drive down Prime street you can see how quaint the old town is. It's remained almost entirely residential except for a few shops along the main drag, there's an old corner store, maintaining that early fifties hand painted American 'milk-bar' quality, and a curious collection of doctors surgeries. The first school was built in 1880. Bishops Head Public School retains the original name of the town and I think is somewhere on the South side - which I didn't explore today. Many of the homesteads still retain the late Victorian style of the peak growth period. There's an array of rather gorgeous multi-coloured rooves as you drive in. The animals in the paddock were all up at the fences, staring curiously at my car, as I passed, as if traffic was a rarity, and I saw no people at all on the streets or paddocks, bizarrely. The first census in the area amounted to 96, and three years ago the census indicated the population was about 4, 340. So it's hardly a rapidly growing population, but I expected to see SOME sign of life. Of the population's heritage; 70 percent are Italian, Irish or Anglo Saxon, with the remainder being of various Eastern European nations. It's a fairly white bread place, an archaic relic of the past, not unlike a lot of these backwater Australian towns. God knows what became of the indigenous population, I'll be doing some research on the matter in coming weeks. I was amazed by the colour once you left the dry bush. Some impressive flower beds are kept in well-tended gardens, vibrant rainbows of tonality and pretty splotchy multicoloured hues. Local flora include Blakely's red gum, The New England stringy bark, silver top stringy bark. Blackberry, bracken, Lantana and other invasive weeds are also common; I could see them intruding sinisterly through various yards and fences. There are abundant forms of local wildlife, which the many streets in Bishop's head are named after. There are many pest animals here too, so I understand, including foxes, rabbits and feral goats, the area, historically was also once host to vast populations of Australian Megafauna. But that's getting into Ancient pre-human-history. I drove a little bit around the town to explore before arriving at my leased house, mainly absorbing the quaint homesteads and reading all the road names; named after local fauna. Currawong Road. Magpie Place. Echidna Street. Blacksnake Lane. Fruitbat road. There were some lovely buildings on Fruitbat road, truly magnificent, but I didn't travel far enough to see the old Cardinal palace. Redbelly drive. Huntsman Street. Crow St. Finally I came to my own street, Livestock Circuit, which wound around to a culdesac where my grand old house stood, number 7. It's a big old style farm house, painted a pale lime colour; not the most attractive place, but for six months it'll do me just fine. I had been extremely daunted by not seeing anyone in the town on the drive in, wondering where the hell everyone was, when I chanced on the girl, walking through the old bush trail. She took me by complete surprise, somehow I hadn't at all expected such a modern looking, youthful, dare I say extremely attractive young woman to live in a rural setting like this. Tromping loudly on loose stones. She had kind of rosy blonde hair, short cut to her shoulders, her clothes were casual, almost farm-like, she was extremely skinny, but flushed and lively looking. The girl had raised her arm at me and waved from twenty metres away; You must be the one moving in. she yelled out gleefully, I guess that makes us neighbours. Then she had got an excited look in her eye, and turned to run off, I'll come and introduce myself, just let me have a shower and get changed first. I've just been running and I'm all sweaty. With that she had slipped off before I had been able to say a word. This was well before the sun went down, but the girl proved true to her word and did indeed return in three or four hours. In the meantime I had begun to unpack my car. The sun was getting low in the sky, and I was feeling flustered by the sense of desperation to the town. Could I really live here in the middle of nowhere? As the sun sunk, the local Red gums began to glow in the fuzzy-dark like frozen fire, arms twisting and glowing in the night like flames. I began to fantasise, believing I could be in some medieval town, totally cut off from industry, another time entirely preserved, a piece of the past; with people for who all intents may prove to be completely hostile towards me, a different class of people to myself, me- a city slicker, but the girl had at least been friendly, that was a positive sign. It took me about an hour to unload all my things from the back of my dinky old Ford. I haven't bothered to even begin opening the boxes tonight, leaving them stacked up in the living area. There was some mail addressed to the householder from an electricity company tucked under the door. I had to chase away some rogue ibis' from the porch, then I entered to soak up the fully furnished, lavish interior. The inside of the house was indeed quite spectacular. The house was apparently once owned by a prominent Catholic clergyman, but is now owned by a salesman who upkeeps the original household exactly as it was left by the priest, who I'm told died of natural causes. The old floorboards creaked under my New Balance runners. The furniture has a very conservative quality to it, coming off almost like an old monastery, the kitchen and fridge and alike have evidently not been modernised since the 70's, giving them a dingy, bohemian feeling. The back of the house plays like a collection at a museum, filled with quite phenomenal paintings of the area, indigenous art and historical pieces kept in glass cases. I had initially gravitated towards an elegant, mahogany chess-board displayed on the classical styled antique Louis V dining table. It was a beautiful hand carved board, with classic European, probably German figures. Delicately I had picked up one of the fragile pieces, a bishop, fingering it gently to find the wood was very old, and splintering at the diagonal cut of the mouth: markedly. Without any sudden movement, I suddenly felt the shards of bishop-wood pierce my thumb. A dark globule of crimson blood immediately formed on my thumbprint, and I dropped the piece to the floor, yelling with pain. The dark blood ran, flowing thinly and began to sprinkle Jackson Pollock like spirals; first on the chessboard, then on the lacquered hardwood floor. I stuck my thumb in my mouth, rushing to the kitchen. The salty blood caused my tongue to salivate, and putting my thumb under the tap, already free of pain, I began to contemplate dinner. I'd known there wouldn't be much open when I arrived, so I'd cleverly anticipated my hunger, and picked up a large meat-pie at a truck stop on the highway, which shortly thereafter I sat down and supped upon, already forgetting my thumb which now only stung - with a dull throbbing sensation. I picked up a piece of paper on the grand table as I spooned the delicious pastry and mince and gravy into my mouth. 'Preserving the possessions of Archbishop Raymond Gubbels. It read, Dear Tenant, as caretaker of number 7 Livestock, you are to be completely responsible for the upkeep of all possessions in the house, and any damages to the possessions will be repayed out of your tenant bond. All items upstairs are free for perusal, and items which aren't encased may be used at your careful leisure. It is advised you do not concern yourself with any of the items in the basement beneath the back stairs, as these are merely for storage, and not part of the heritage museum. We hope you enjoy your stay in Bishop's head. All questions can be directed to Blacklab publishing who will handle all real estate and tenant issues directly with the client. I stuffed another scoop full of the delicious meat pie, covered in tomato sauce, and masticated loudly ling things over in my brain. Spitting flakes of pastry as i mumbled to myself. I found it interesting that the anonymous writer of the letter had used the old name of the town 'Bishops head' instead of 'Bishops Valley' but shortly changed tracks of curiosity. The mention of a basement had immediately got me curious, the owner clearly didn't appreciate the mind of a writer, moreover a researcher of 'the occult' as the very nature of the business revolved in opening doors that one is not supposed to, the doors of perception, as Jim Morrison said, you got to 'break on through to the other side. I resolved to have a little explore around the backyard once i finished dinner, before it got too dark. That was about 3 hours ago now, when I had ventured out into the back garden, and saw the padlocked green door leading to the basement beneath the house. I had checked the keys on the large copper ring which my publishers had given me, and tested all of the keys in the curious padlock, only to find that none of them fit. But to my relief, my agonising pondering was mildly satiated when I saw the small glass window which looked into the room. It was dark in the basement, but I could still make out a large wooden table and shelves, covered in mostly commonplace items, and I became temporarily satisfied that there was no great mystery to the basement itself, but it was, like the letter suggested; merely a place for storage of private heritage items. One curious thing I was to note, was the odd synchronicity to some of the objects stored in that dim room; which did strike a chord with me; being the same as that of the minor arcana of the Australian tarot deck I was creating. (If you're not a student of the occult, the tarot is basically an Italian ancestor of the playing card) and just as modern cards have four suits, the tarot also traditionally has four suits, though instead of hearts, spades, diamonds and clubs, the tarot has wands, pentacles, swords and cups. These; are referred to as the minor Arcana and provide the basic units of meaning which a fortune teller accesses in their alleged process of divination. I'll no doubt get more in depth with this information regarding the tarot later, but to explain briefly the co-incidence, for my own tarot deck, I had created a new arcana, featuring the four suits: rifles, candles, cups and opals, so you can imagine the mild unease I felt observing the stacks of packets of candles, and lines of precious opals along the shelves in the basement under the stairs. Opal mining IS unique to Australia, and there may even be an opal mine in Oper-Bodie, so it's not entirely an unusual discovery. It also makes sense that the agents would have locked the door, given the value of the precious stones. Still, it is my profession to observe co-incidences and evaluate if they are indeed random incidents, or if they may perhaps form a pattern or tapestry of greater mystical meaning. The synchronicity wedged itself in my mind, but I was able to move on, and explore the vast unkempt backyard of number seven. It was evident that there hadn't been any gardening done in the yard for many decades. The bush was wild and overgrown, there were giant hirsute banksia trees and ivy running over large rocks, and the perimeter itself ran off into unexplorable bushland, the only avenue of interest, being the rustic, but man cleared) path which I knew must run down to Green Gills River. I knew I wouldn't be able to get a great look at the river now, when it was getting dark, but I figured it couldn't hurt to have a quick exploration of the trail. So, pushing the spidery branches aside, I began to walk cautiously along the ragged path. The Cicadas were only just beginning their song at this time, and the Valley was mostly of an unearthly quiet. Dry branches cracked under my feet as I descended the muddy trail, pushing leaves out of my face, occasionally being whipped by hard sticks. I had been walking for only seven minutes when I began to second guess myself. The dusk was really in full swing now, and it was getting increasingly difficult to see. Sand flies and mosquitoes began to nibble at me. There was something else too, an anxious feeling rising within me. There were two smells which really turned my guts and made me uneasy, marijuana smoke. And the smell of mangroves. That latter disagreeable smell was now growing extremely strong. The vile smell of natural compost, an ecosystem of rotting, festering dead organisms, was even saltier, even more horrible than any previous encounter with mangroves I had had. I was still on the path, but I could hear the coastal wind now, blowing up through the estuary and into Green Gills River. The slow, heavy wind almost sounded like breathing, as the sound of the river tide lapping on the shore also became audible. The mud was getting thicker and squelched around my ankles, when out of the blue, I lost my grip and slipped forward, landing awkwardly on my face and neck and sliding down the muddy slope, stopping only after descending 3 metres and bogging myself. I lifted my muddy face off the ground contemptuosly, at first resentful, then happy to be relatively unscathed. As I put my hands out to push myself up onto my elbows, I almost gagged. I knew the smell of death had been more pungent than mere mangroves. Before me lay the carcass of a rotting kangaroo, in the dim light of the moon I could see its festering flesh, the skull beneath its dried black eyeball, grey decaying meat, wrecked in all it's hideous horror. I sprung carefully to my feet- yes, I had had quite enough exploration for one night. I tried to erase the memory of the poor animals mangled body from my mind, scaling back up the path, and using my hoodie to wipe the thick, stinking mud from my face and eyes. It wasn't the image I would normally like to present of myself to the world. A mud-riddled vagrant, whipped and cut from thorns and branches, staggering blindly from the bushes like a madman. You can imagine my embarrassment when I came to the top of the garden path, and found the girl from earlier, waiting coyly and patiently in my backyard. 'Oh my. Said the girl, suppressing her fit of giggling with her hand, to feign empathy, Having a look around. I looked up, still trying to scrub the foul smelling mud from my face, Oh. Uh. Hello. I stammered awkwardly, walking out into the moonlight. 'Are you hurt. She asked genuinely. I looked at her through one good eye, holding the stinging mud stained one loosely with my dirty hand, Not really. I said, still wiping. We soon moved to a nearby patch of grass at the base of the old concrete steps, Oh. I said, awkwardly fumbling for the ring of keys in my pocket; Please. Do come in for me wash my face. As I unlocked the door, she smiled and pulled something out of her khaki bag, I've got something even better. Here. A house warming present. She twisted her hips, and held out a bottle of boutique red wine, grinning profusely. I took the bottle obligingly and opened the door in resigned humiliation, moving rapidly towards the kitchen. The cicadas were croaking incessantly by then, and I was ready to break down emotionally, backing away from the stranger, and sinking into my own maudlin the girl, with some bizarre country charm refused my city body-language blockades, moving straight over and grabbing a sponge, let me help you with that. She said kindly, soaking a queenly portion of water and violently dabbling the mud from my face. I removed my glasses. 'My name is Pheobe. She said, her big brown eyes staring motherly into my own. 'Pheobe Rimbaud. I live up on Crow Street. Don't worry, I'm a freak here too. Been here. Two months. I'm from Adelaide. I surrendered to her hospitality, throwing my muddy hoodie into the sink and moving my neck so she could clean the hardening mud from my left ear and neck. 'Flynn. I replied, calming, Flynn VanDeBerg. I'm a. Writer. She said, turning around politely while I took off my shirt, I know. I'm contracted by the same publisher. Thats why we're here. That's why we're all here. She said, accentuating the sentence in a curiously morose tone, moving over towards the table and picking up my book, which was at this time still inside, get it. She began to casually flip through the pages of 'The Koala Killer. Rimbaud? I thought to myself. She must have French relatives. 'We all. I asked genuinely puzzled, returning to our conversation, I turned around, clean and clothed, putting my glasses back on- only to find the girl had disappeared. Finally I noticed the ajar front door. 'Grab some glasses, I'll fill you in' she yelled from outside. I didn't even know if the house was furnished with wine receptacles, but quickly tufting my hair in the mirror, opening a few cupboards, I found two large wine glasses and meandered towards the door. As I came out on the verandah, I found the girl positively relaxed, draped over the outside recliner like someone on a beach holiday. The bottle of wine sat open on the table next to my book, which she had skim read and discarded. 'You mentioned other people. I asked, I wasn't aware that. She sat up, motioning her hand towards the bottle of wine, as if to hurry me along. 'No. It's not what you think. Quickly I strode towards her, placing the glasses flat, and gently pouring two full glasses of the rich Crimson liquid. 'I'm not here for anything to do with your deck. I just heard about you through my agent. I'm an editor, but they may have sent me down here to scope out the place, before they sent you and your friend down. I think. There's three of us. My flat mates. We're kind of a group. she said, laughing strangely, It's a local wine. From Oper-Bodie actually. A Cabernet Merlot. She pointed to the wine again. 'A good drop. I began to notice a mildly manic personality that I hadn't detected in her at all when we had first laid eyes upon each other. I took a sip of the wine, as she threw half a glass down her throat. There was something dangerous about this girl, like Nancy Spungen or Courtney Love. Something broken in her eyes. 'I'll take you tomorrow and introduce you around. Get to know the locals. That's why you're here right. So what do you think of the place huh? It's just heaven isn't it. She kind of leapt back on to her feet, as if she couldn't get comfortable anywhere, topping up her wine and then moving on to lean her hands on the balcony ledge. I finished my glass to catch up with the mad girl, filling up another glass and moving in beside her. The cicada's changing from a song of isolation and loneliness to one of tension and romance. 'Are your parents French. I asked, making conversation. She turned her head stiffly and raised an eyebrow, not saying anything but merely giving me a vacant look. 'I don't talk about my parents' she finally said, turning back out towards the dark bush beyond; she drifted back into a fantasy, Look out there. Nature is a living beast. A darkness with no answer. Isn't it bizarre? But we treat it as though it's all so common place. We're like these alien experiments grown inside one another, wet wombs, Nature's frankensteins. Dr Moreau's animals. So what do we do with the great gift of life? Build houses. Get mortgages. Hide away from nature. Start corporations. What are we afraid of? Of living, I think. I raised my eyebrow now, taken aback by her strange rants, her unabashed soliloquy's, giving wine to strangers, her odd comfortableness and yet constant discomfort in her skin. She was unphased by my facial expressions, moving to face the other way, I'm sorry. I'm actually really tired. She said in a different tone, like a bi-polar personality, I'll come down tomorrow. Show you around. Don't worry. I think you're going to like it here. What's not to like? Right. Saying this she turned again, facing me with a sudden vulnerability, holding her glass with two hands in her crotch, shrugging and looking up through scared eyes. She seemed to crave comfort, moving towards me, like a kangaroo, trying to brush it's head against a stubborn father. 'Are you. She asked, I mean are you seeing anyone. With that she placed one of her hands gently on the side of my jeans, running her finger tips innocently along my leather belt. I got caught up in her eyes, leaning in within inches of her neck. I could smell her perfume, sweet but tacky. She pushed closer. My nose fell into her neck, I felt my wine glass going limp in my hands, and my body begin to grow warm. My lips grew thirsty, and I almost began to kiss her neck, until, breathing heavily I managed to pull myself off. Escaping the seduction. As I raised my head, I noticed something just under her shirt collar. Gently raising my arm, I pushed the collar of her blouse to one side. There was a curious mark. About the size of a five cent coin. It comprised of two parallel lines, with twirled ends, and a swirl like a nine, or a six, on each side of the line. I began to speak softly, How did you get this. Suddenly, she changed again. Pushing herself violently away, It's just a stupid birth mark' she yelled angrily. 'You know you're pretty nosey for someone who's out of their depth, in a foreign town. It's been a long day. I gotta get home. Then she grabbed the bottle and took off into the dark. I could see her silhouette walk up onto Crow Street and into the big three story house with lots of lit Windows. Watching, awestruck. As she disappeared. What just happened? That's pretty much caught up to where I am now. Not just a little baffled. Perplexed. The sound of my voice. A digital record making the insecure seem temporarily secure. The taste of wine and perfume have all conspired, worked me up into a heightened state of arousal/anxiety. I wonder if Phoebe will still come by tomorrow? I wonder what that mark really was, it looked more like a burn than a birth mark, the edges were raised, pink, like a scar. I'm standing on the verandah. There's a crippling quiet, but I can see something now. It's ten thirty at night. It's so quiet here, nothing but the cicadas and the breeze, you could hear a car from a mile away coming down serpentine road. That's just what I hear now, then I can see, the lights move like sinister lanterns, along the winding road of serpentine. Three. Four. Cars coming into town. But who? Why? I slowly reach over and pick up my book, anxiously trying to curb the suspense with self distraction. Two of the template cards of my designs for the major Arcana of the tarot deck; which were in the back- fall out onto the table. Judgement - the image of a barrister wearing an old powdered Whig, looking studiously at case files, in his fine blue silk gown. The Milky Way - A picture of that great river of stars which I can see so clearly above me in the crisp, country sky. My heart starts to pulse in my chest. Four black cars pull into my yard, engines spluttering loudly. The spotlights blind me. Audiobook available here: Chapter Two.
