Free Full Growing pains au chocolat. Growing pains are real but essentially harmless muscular pain that can affect children between the ages of three and five years, and from eight to 11 years. Boys and girls are equally affected. Some young people may continue to experience growing pains into their early adolescence or teenage years. Pain may be experienced in the legs – often the calf, front of thigh or behind the knees – and is often worse in the afternoon or evening. Sometimes, the pain can wake a child from their sleep. The cause is not known. Even though the child can be in a lot of pain, no damage is happening to the child's bones or muscles, and growing pains can respond to simple treatments. Symptoms of growing pains The symptoms of growing pains include: Muscular aches and pains are felt in both legs – typically in the calf, behind the knee and in the front of the thigh. Moving the legs does not make the pain better or worse, which shows that the joints are not affected. The pain comes and goes, occurring perhaps every night for a week or so, or a few times a week, or only occasionally. The onset of pain is around the late afternoon or evening. The pain is worse during the night, particularly when the child is supposed to be going to sleep. The pain may be severe enough to wake the child from sleep. The pain is gone by morning. The pain doesn't cause a limp or make it hard to run and play normally. Occasionally, the muscles of the arms may be affected as well. The child may also complain of headaches. Causes of growing pains The cause of growing pains is unclear. It is often mistakenly thought that the pain is caused by the growth of bones. Yet bones grow slowly, even during growth spurts, and this slow growth does not cause pain. Some children have growing pains on and off for many years, but usually they go by mid-adolescence. For some children, there is more pain after they have been doing a lot of running and playing, but not all children have this pattern of play then pain. The pain may be due to: Muscular tiredness – more physical activity than usual can be linked to more aching muscles for some children, although all children have some days when they do a lot more things than other days and most do not get pain. Poor posture – standing, sitting or walking awkwardly puts greater than usual strain on the supporting muscles of the body. Sometimes, children whose feet roll in (with very flat feet) may have more trouble with pains than other children. Emotional upset – stress or unhappiness may trigger aches and pains, but this is not often the case for many children who have pain. Growing pains do not affect how a child walks and runs and they do not make a child unwell. If your child is limping, is complaining of pain during the day, is unwell or if the leg is sore to touch, you need to get your child checked by a doctor. They may have an infection or an injury. Diagnosis of growing pains Growing pains are diagnosed by ruling out all other causes of leg pain. Other health problems that can cause pain in the legs include: arthritis – which damages joints infections (such as osteomyelitis) and some virus infections (such as Ross River virus) problems that affect how the muscles work together – such as knock knees and very flat feet. Always see your doctor if your child: has severe pain or pain that only affects one leg (or arm) or if the pain is still there during the day is unwell or has a fever, loss of appetite or rashes has swelling, reddening or tenderness of the leg or arm is limping. Treatment for growing pains Always see your doctor to make sure that there is no other cause of pain. Things that may help your child manage the pain include: plenty of cuddles and reassurance that the pain will go away and that their legs will feel normal by morning massaging the painful area using special massage oils (this is not necessary to easing the pain, but may help your child feel special) heat treatment, such as warm baths and heat packs medicines that reduce pain, such as paracetamol (check the bottle to make sure that you give the right dose) if your child has feet that roll in or if they trip a lot, ask a podiatrist to check their legs and posture don't tell the child that the pain is associated with playing or growing, or else the child may feel afraid of both. Your 8-year-old son wakes up crying in the night complaining that his legs are throbbing. You rub them and soothe him as much as you can, but you're uncertain about whether to give him any medicine or take him to the doctor. Sound familiar? Your son is probably having growing pains, which about 25% to 40% of kids do. They usually strike during two periods: in early childhood among 3- to 5-year-olds and, later, in 8- to 12-year-olds. Signs and Symptoms Growing pains always concentrate in the muscles, rather than the joints. Most kids report pains in the front of their thighs, in the calves, or behind the knees. Joints affected by more serious diseases are swollen, red, tender, or warm — the joints of kids having growing pains look normal. Although growing pains often strike in late afternoon or early evening before bed, pain can sometimes wake a sleeping child. The intensity of the pain varies from child to child, and most kids don't have the pains every day. What Causes Them? Bone growth hasn't been proved to cause pain. So "growing" pains might just be aches and discomfort from the jumping, climbing, and running that active kids do during the day. The pains can happen after a child has had a particularly athletic day. Diagnosing Growing Pains One symptom that doctors find most helpful in making a diagnosis of growing pains is how a child responds to touch while in pain. Kids who have pain from a serious medical cause don't like to be handled because movement can make the pain worse. But those with growing pains respond differently — they feel better when they're held, massaged, and cuddled. Growing pains are what doctors call a diagnosis of exclusion. One day, however, he receives a mysterious invitation to use an app on his smart phone, and, upon accepting, finds himself thrust into an augmented reality where superpowers exist, riches implode, and death glooms overhead. Coined Darwins Game, this survival-of-the-fittest situation demands everything – but supplies almost nothing in return. The first episode is a double-feature, but it only serves to stab home the point that this anime has a difficult time outrunning its tired premises and eye-rolling events. Motivations are bland. Outcomes have little consequential value. Themes take a backseat to uninteresting dialogue. Alongside the lackluster duels and the inevitable overseers, the storytelling has thus far been a keen recipe for trite dealings. A lack of meta details and necessary explanations seek to create an air of mystery to the whole debacle, yet this direction exacerbates the shows problems. I. e., this no knowledge is no good, for the implausibility and the irrationality of the decisions and the confrontations equates to suspended disbelief that drags down the evolution of its natural selection. Drop It “I wasnt too hopeful going into the show, death game shows are generally hard to pull off due to the large cast and limited run time. Darwins Game attempts to tackle this issue by focusing on only a few characters. Normally youd think thats a good thing, but if anything its to the shows detriment in this case, as theres not a single interesting character in the show. Thus far out of all the named characters, only two of them has been developed to the point where I can even call them one-dimensional. And Id be damned if theyre not some impressively one-dimensional characters. We're stuck with an extremely bland insert protagonist, wiith the few traits he has actually affecting his character negatively and a heroine who looks good, but out of place in this show. Speaking of visuals, the fight choreography is really boring and the animation and art style is nothing special at all so we end up with mediocrity in that regard. If I am to be honest, the show has so many faults, I can begin to cover them all and it'd only be worth watching as a hate watch or as popcorn material with your mates. There's probably a good 20-30 shows better than Darwin's Game from this season, so just don't watch i unless you're really bored. ” (English Title: Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken. Banjos Perspective Must Watch It Anime is life. At least, that seems to be the case for Midori Asakusa of Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na. She dreams of making anime, drawing out sketches and ideas based on her own favorite elements and the avant-garde city where she lives. With help from her money-hungry best friend Sayaka Kanamori and their newfound comrade Tsubame Mizusaki, these three ladies embark on a journey to truly define art, animation, and ultimately anime. And they certainly go the distance. Above anything else, this anime personifies its namesake, creating elaborate sequences, stylized imaginings, and incredible moments that shape it into a juggernaut of visual awe. The fun musical choices complement the passion therein, yet its the self-made sound-effects from the voice actresses themselves that instill a personalized feel into the engaging wonders. To put devils advocate in motion, a rather loose plot and possible pigeonholing for the main trio raise the tiniest of flags. Nevertheless, to return the other way, its overall potential is clearly there anyway as the open-ended nature of its storytelling and the grounded realism of the characters prove it has inherent writing chops. With meta inclusions of drawing techniques and the fact that the comedic pieces land upright, and this anime becomes worthy of several high-fives. Another Perspective, courtesy of /u/meiiro: Must Watch It “From first glance, “Keep Your Hands Off Of Eizouken! ” may look like your typical high school girl comedy. However, its much more than that; Eizouken is a quirky, imaginative look into the world of animation and people following their passions. It follows three distinctly different girls, each with their own fleshed out personalities and aspirations, on their journey to creating anime together. The most enjoyable thing about Eizouken is that its never afraid to blur reality and fiction together. Each brainstorming session transforms into a fantastical journey. Figuring out how a windmill moves turns into a dynamic animation sequence with explosions and all new inventions. Even more than its random ventures into fantasy, the setting of Eizouken is its own breed of interesting. A faculty room in a pool, a clock on a school the students cant even see- theres so much to unpack, and it never gets boring. These settings only serve to enhance the true stars, the characters. The dynamic between the main trio is nothing short of amazing; each personality is designed to compliment and contrast the other. More than that, the cast is already fleshed out and realistic; theres no such thing as being two-dimensional from the very get-go. Overall, Eizouken is an enjoyable watch, down-to-earth in plot and outside the box in presentation. Many have described it to be in the same genre as Shirobako - a sincere love letter to anime. If theres one show you dont want to miss this season, its Eizouken. Banjos Perspective Watch It What do you get when you take the future-crime aspect of Minority Report, the mind-delving craziness of Inception, and the persuasive psychosis of Silence of the Lambs? The answer is ID: Invaded. An original (that is, non-source adaptation) story, this anime has started for itself an intriguing crime thriller in most regards. The show balances its time between the detective work of its central protagonist and the informants who analyze his findings. What transpires, then, is a cool duality whose simultaneous weirdness and realness melds together in a very neat way. Moreover, the anime is keen on exploring the important members of its cast and the wild setting it has created. Intentional parallels across plotlines and the blurring of lines between the “heroes” and the “villains” further pushes the story and the characters to higher levels. The artistic vision for this show isnt anything too special, so there does exist room for improvement. But this early on, the predictions and discoveries of its identity should hopefully be a satisfying endeavor. Another Perspective, courtesy of /u/Nazenn: Drop It “With obvious world similarities to Psycho-Pass and an intriguing main character, ID:Invaded had all the pieces needed to be the next big sci-fi crime mystery, but it spends far too much of its runtime focusing on its bloated side cast and repetitive exposition. Any moment were not following the MC characters investigations in a criminals mindscape, were usually stuck sitting in a room listening to generic “investigators” talk at each other, using lifeless dialogue that doesnt showcase any of their individual personalities. One character will say something, another will repeat it back to them as a question, only for the next character to repeat it again in a different way. If theyre not using techno-babble to explaining the details of the machine in excruciating detail irrelevant to the current drama going on, theyre narrating everything thats happening on screen to the level of allowing the show to be more of an audiobook. While the MCs investigations and history are very interesting, they also fall victim to this over-exposition the moment we return to the investigators. It strips away a lot of the mystery when are made to listen rather than watch, having the show tell you what does and doesnt matter. If the show cut this excess and focused purely on the three interesting characters it would be a different story, but with its current structure it makes it hard to recommend unless you want feel like youre being talked at for 20 minutes each week. ” Banjos Perspective Drop It Sometime in the future, true virtual reality has become a norm for most gamers. Reiji Mukudori, interested in such a place, decides to make his own character within such a VRMMO video game: Infinite Dendrogram. Unlike traditional MMOs, however, this adventure has left excitement behind. The key motif of this story comes from the understood notion that this VR world is organic and alive. Sadly, thats the extent of the anime, for the unfortunate reality is instead that the surrounding parts are devoid of the same fortitude. The main character, his “maid”, and the supporting cast are largely forgettable. The story beats have been totally ineffective. The attempts at incorporating the gaming side of things are meager at best. It goes on. The anime doesnt seem up to the challenge of asking – let alone answering – the moral and the societal questions that their literal realistic fantasy entails. Not to mention that, on an artistic front, the show shows weak signs already. When all is said and done, the scope and the impact of this project is not just finite but practically zero. Consider It “I can hear the detractors now. Yadda yadda SAO clone yadda yadda loli sidekick yadda yadda kuma yadda yadda drop. What these sweeping generalizations miss is that this show is actually a fun thing to watch. The fight animation has been great, the details of the world are wonderful, and the main characters are nicely done yet without the incessant edgelord mentality that is far too common in the VRMMO subgenre. You know that they are playing a game for the sake of playing a game, without any need for grand stakes or heavy consequences. And oh boy, does that game look like fun. A sandbox environment where the characters can change the game world significantly would be on my top list of things to try out, the concept of fully AI driven NPCs is fascinating, and the little hints about the greater gameworld makes me wish that full-dive technology was a real thing so I could waste my free time playing it. For fans of the VRMMO subgenre, this should be promoted to Watch status. For everyone else, consider this as an alternative to the others languishing in your drop lists. ” (English Title: Interspecies Reviewers) Banjos Perspective Consider It From humans to elves, demons to beasts, and any other manner of creature in-between, Ishuzoku Reviewers stars a plethora of species-specific humanoids. But its not quite that tame. Oh no. In fact, its the complete opposite, for this anime focuses on the one inherent quality that drives biology: sex. Stunk, Zel, and Crim make it their mission to critique these sexual encounters, describing their likes and dislikes which culminate in that all-important climactic score. In doing so, the anime thrusts with vigor in different ways. The comedy angle keeps the content lighthearted throughout. The emphasis on being sex-positive aligns with the ecchi genre. And the scenes may as well be deemed pornography for just how much they are willing to depict (especially so in the uncensored version. Ironically enough, though, the diversity within the anime is also its downfall. Catering to everyone and everything means that, amidst the laughs and the sexiness, the weird and the nasty inevitably materialize. Indeed, needing to endure such moments is arguably not justifiable in the long run. If nothing else, the project has some nice production values, and the sex shows no signs of stopping its upward debauchery. So, for now, its final review must wait. Consider It “Ishuzoku Reviewers is certainly a unique show, the entire premise is simple, two guys want to have sex with as many different creatures in their fantasy world as possible, and after they sex up their local brothels, they write a review about their experience with said species, and give it a rating from 1-10. The art is pretty good, and the character design is honestly pretty great from what I've seen so far. Every species has its own unique traits, and no two species that I've seen really look too similar. On top of this, the show probably has one of my favorite OPs of the season, and the ED isn't bad either. The show, as you'd expect, is very fanservice heavy, there are a few scenes that are honestly, just hentai, so if you're not into that, I'd definitely recommend staying away from this show. However, if you're looking for an ecchi heavy show, or you don't mind ecchi, this show may just be for you since the humor in the show itself can honestly be pretty hilarious! However, one final point I unfortunately feel I need to make since the show is an ecchi after all. If you're the type of person who prefers small or medium breasts, you might be somewhat disappointed as thus far the show has been pretty lacking in that regard. ” (English Title: BOFURI: I Dont Want to Get Hurt, so Ill Max Out My Defense. Banjos Perspective Watch It As the other major VRMMO offering of the season, Bofuri follows Maple, a young lady taking part in her first-ever online gaming experience. Like any normal human, she hates pain, and so she stacks points into her defense stat. Then more defense. Then even more defense. So much defense that her build becomes an anomaly worthy of this story. This anime channels cuteness as Maple stumbles into upgrades, skirmishes, and interactions, causing a lot of hilarity and smiles as a result. Her best friend Sally contrasts her both in personality and skills; their buddy duo makes for a wholesome relationship. And the extra side details – such as the variety of enemies, the forums, the admin patches, and so on – solidly round out the underlying game setting. The story and the characters seem content with where theyre at, so theyll most likely not go anywhere too deep or too compelling, missing out on that worthwhile status. But when the action segments impress and the docile moments delight regardless of those factors, the project stacks its own defense in the form of above-average execution. Drop It “ Bofuri ticks all the boxes you expect from an isekai/VRMMO show centered on an overpowered protagonist: light comedy, action, cute girls, etc. Unfortunately, ticking boxes is all it does, and it does so to the detriment of any potential it may have offered. The premise can be grasped entirely from the title. Maple, airhead and VRMMO newbie, dumps her points into vitality and stumbles into the most broken build New World Online has ever seen. In theory, this gimmick has merit; an unkillable protagonist with no offense bumbling through combat could be interesting. This gimmick is also immediately undermined when the world starts bending over backwards to make sure Maple never experiences any struggles whatsoever. Virtually all problems are immediately resolved, often through sheer luck. Maple and co. are blessed with plot armor and play by different rules. Perhaps the saddest thing about Bofuri is that nothing about it is egregious (except the game design) but nothing stands out, either. The world is a bog-standard fantasy VRMMO. The comedy is inoffensive, hardly eliciting a chuckle. There have been two strong action sequences, but they're sandwiched between long segments with little of interest happening. It's relaxed, but it's also utterly forgettable and requires no engagement from the viewer. Even worse, it's brainless, and thinking in-depth just makes its flaws stand out more. I can understand why some might enjoy Bofuri, but I see no reason to watch it over the myriad of other shows it's competing with. ” (English Title: Toilet-bound Hanako-kun) Banjos Perspective Consider It At her school, Nene Yashiro hears about one of the seven mystical wonders haunting their building. She goes to an out-of-the-way bathroom, knocks on the stall, and meets Hanako-kun, the wish-giving spirit who maintains order between their two separate realms. For better or for worse, they now help each other, giving Toilet-bound Hanako-kun its origin. What this show boasts most is a wonderful sense of artistry. Actual animation trends towards the low side, sure, but the shot-for-shot visuals make up for this lack and then some. Vibrant colors. Great use of lighting. Changing styles. Paneled compositions for flair. Nice designs. The anime is definitely one of the best-looking offerings this season. Otherwise, theres not much else to boast about. Its sense of comedy and cuteness isnt the greatest. Its “monster-of-the-week” approach has yet to tie in well with a supposed central throughput. And the characters themselves are uninspired. It also has a (strangely enough) unheard of problem in this medium: incorrect audio tuning. More specifically, the gain on the microphones used by the voice actors and actresses is so high, one can hear the humming feedback during quiet scenes (which are surprisingly common) breaking immersion and demonstrating an obvious misstep in execution. Again, however, the art alone prevents the entire project from being flushed down the toilet. Must Watch It “If youve watched much anime set in high schools, youve probably encountered the “Seven Wonders” trope: a set of seven urban legends the students will use to creep each other out. Hanako-kun gives that trope a clever twist, being set in a school where those rumors are true and supernatural beings from the oddly specific and morbid minds of teenagers really do haunt the halls of the school, ranging from the inconvenient to the deadly. The show is a creepy comedy, sort of in the vein of Nightmare Before Christmas, and while it never fails to deliver a (mostly) lighthearted tone and plenty of laughs, it also provides a wonderfully atmospheric setting and plenty of odd and uncanny moments. This is particularly noticeable in the design of the main character, Nene, who manages to be intensely moe while also being clearly a bit unsettling, with her ever-present skull brooch, green-tipped hair, and doll-like eyes that are a bit strange even for an anime character. The characters have great chemistry, particularly between Hanako-kun and Nene, the two leads. The art in particular is excellent, with a subdued pallet and more stylized designs giving the show a storybook-like feel. The show as a whole has an almost otherworldly quality to it, especially in the old building, where most of the apparitions seem to originate. In all, I have been thoroughly enjoying the show, and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes comedy with a dash of creepiness. ” (English Title: Asteroid in Love) Banjos Perspective Consider It Mira Konohata has a fondness for space and the galactic. Her love of the above sees her joining her schools astronomy-turned-Earth-sciences club where she meets a bunch of likeminded girls. As a group, they aim to learn about the stars, the rocks, and the bonds they share sandwiched by these halves. Credit where credit is due, the vibe of the anime vies for realism. Rather than injecting absurdist comedy or over-the-top silliness, the events and the mood at large stay normalized. It isnt so much flat as it is natural, letting the cute bits and the fun reactions have a subtler delivery. Plus, while the setting is arguably a tad lame, the fluid animation does not go unnoticed for the CGDCT show. However, its probably more accurate to call it “CG. because it has effectively dropped the “DCT”. Despite the premises, where the anime is supposed to be about the study of space and the research into geology, the content often distracts itself. Granted, they work towards fleshing out the characters, so they arent completely meaningless, but the reasoning for telling this tale and consequently the flight of this asteroid is flimsy at best. Must Watch It “This show is, essentially, a cute girls show, but this time it's an Astronomy/Geology club. There's a diverse cast of characters, cute in their own ways, but not overly saccharine like GochiUsa can be. One of the things that often plagues cute girl shows is the reliance on characters explicitly calling attention to something zany another character has done. Koisuru Asteroid seems to largely avoid this pitfall. It's not what I'd consider laugh out loud funny, but I believe it's trying to balance its more kooky jokes and gags with more endearing character moments sometimes glazed with yuri undertones, and having seen the first 3 episodes, I feel it's done an excellent job of this so far. That's not to say Asteroid doesn't have elements that feel obligatory for shows of this type, episode 2 features a bath-house scene for instance (because of course it does) however even that is used to actually weave dialogue into the show - dialogue directly relevant to both the situation the characters are in and the overall subject matter of the story. Much like Doga Kobo's previous work ( New Game! in particular, which has a very similar artstyle to Asteroid) the colour palette is bright and inviting and the girls in general have pretty solid character designs. I think this show is a must-watch not because it's necessarily ground-breaking, but is a very competently written and produced cute girl show in almost every area, and those of us that like that kind of show will definitely enjoy Asteroid. ” (English Title: In/Spectre) Banjos Perspective Consider It Youkai are the otherworldly beings that beget reverence or peril depending on their alignment. For Kotoko Iwanaga and Kurou Sakuragawa, two seemingly normal people intimately connected to youkai, these beings require their wisdom and their strength (respectively. And for Kyokou Suiri as a whole, these swirling dynamics lead to a peculiar story. Two key elements form the core of this show: Kotoko herself and the infused comedy. Kotoko more or less carries the project. Her rapport with Kurou is fun, her characterization is off-kilter, and her forwardness keeps it all moving. As for the comedy, it upholds the tricky business of coexisting with the drama without ruining it. Thats not an easy feat, so it should be praised to some extent. Beyond these two elements, the rest is mixed. Huge amounts of dialogue are not necessarily a negative, and the exchanges here are by no means laborious. However, its a decidedly uneventful task as they (most often Kotoko) just sit down and explain ad nauseum without there being much to care about. Furthermore, the youkai backdrop has been uninteresting, too, and the art, while solid, really only has the character designs going for it. Thus, the current inspection stays nominal. Watch It “An anime can have many strengths. Production values, characters, directing, story, but Kyouko Suiri strengths lies in the thing that isn't noticeable right away but is as essential as any other aspect of an anime: the dialogue. The characters in the anime are witty, thus the dialogue is witty, but it isn't witty in loud and overwhelming sense. All the remarks are evenly spread out throughout an episode so that the dialogue continues to feel fresh. But the biggest reason why the dialogue is so superb is how everything flows so well. Characters talk for minutes on end but it never gets stale or annoying because of how well their sentences flow. The pace of how the words are spoken is soothing. The banter between the characters, how much they respond to one another and how much information is actually being said is juuuuuust right. I have found myself watching episodes only to hear the ED and going like ‘wait, the episode is already over? and that is not a bad thing at all. The reason why I gave this anime a ' Watch It' and not a ' Must Watch It' is because 1. the story is good now but I can't say much for later and 2. The anime is very dialogue heavy, so even if the dialogue is great if you like more action in an anime I recommend not checking this out. For everyone else, if you like mysteries and witty characters, absolutely check this anime out. ” Banjos Perspective Consider It In Nekopara, cats are no longer four-legged pets with fur all over their bodies. Rather, they are basically humans with fluffy ears and expressive tails that simply take on the mannerisms of their feline counterparts. And for Chocolo, Vanilla, and the other cat girls, their daily lives are simplistic enough to have few worries, save for a recent development. Per their catlike nature, the anime brands itself as a slice-of-life project with cuteness as its mainstay. The “cats” will climb along buildings, drool at the sight of fish, and chase after inanimate objects. All the while, their cute behavior emerges as they handle regular human activities, work at the confectionary of their household, and bounce their personalities off each other in distinct pairings. Artistically, the designs for the cat girls are varied and fit the motifs of the anime, but the remainder of its visual acumen is passable at best. Thematically, the anime isnt very concerned with delivering a message. Narratively, the small subplot tries its paw at world building but lacks the interest to make it meaningful. So, characteristically, the anime elicits smiles no doubt, yet whether this shtick uses up its nine lives before the end has become a dire possibility. Consider It “Ahem… do you know about moe anime? Cute girls and their adorable antics, fluffy atmosphere and expressive animation, all attached to a weekly broadcast of the utmost charm… Do you like shows like that? If so, consider checking out Nekopara! The cutest nekos youve ever seen await you there~ Set in a world where sapient catgirls are commonplace, Nekoparas story loosely follows Minazuki Kashous opening of his bakery La Soleil. However, any plot is entirely marginalized in favour of foregrounding the antics of the Minazuki familys nekos – the moemoe “good stuff” were all here for. The ensemble of catgirls includes lovable idiot Chocola, deadpan snarker Vanilla, closet-pervert Cinnamon, among others – archetypes that nobody hasnt seen before, but still do a respectable job of bouncing off of each other and creating light-hearted comedy. The shows appeal is greatly enhanced by the good job it does transferring the nekos lavishly detailed visual novel designs into animation, with plenty of perky nekomimi and expressive tail wags. For those skeptical of the propertys origins, the TV anime is remarkably ecchi-free and family-friendly, trading off cutting-edge chest-bounciness customization for all-ages wholesomeness. All in all, Nekopara is not a project thats especially ambitious or exciting, but it successfully capitalizes on the appeal of its source material and does its job as a moe anime very competently. If you are interested in a show thats fluffier than a catgirls ears but doesnt do much else besides, then joining Kashou and furrends at La Soleil would be a purrfect choice. ” Banjos Perspective Drop It The psychology of the mind is simultaneously a beautiful and terrifying field. Doubly so for the men of Pet who dive into this dichotomy to manipulate their hapless victims. Hiroki and Tsukasa are two such individuals that do the diving, and, while the anime would like the audience to believe its capabilities, this mess is not very promising. So much of the show is already either misplaced or wrong. The production values, from the consistency of the art to the voice acting, are subpar. The characters desperately wish to be backed by mature writing but come off as ridiculous. And the horror elements do not have a strong enough punch to influence the viewer. If that werent bad enough, the anime gets worse. Unnecessary convolution in the storytelling, uninteresting drama, and low entertainment opportunities in general compound the present mess into a catastrophe. Theres almost nothing worth praising in this project, no matter how many “peaks” or “valleys” this pet visits. Watch It “Pet is a psychological show, about people with powers to get into other's minds and alter memories. While this has been played out in various shows to different degrees, Pet manages to drive home the feeling of how scary this would actually be, and how it can be exploited. What this show excels in, is the structure it establishes to 'memories' and the rules for 'altering' them, which the characters strictly abide by. This results in clear boundaries of what they can and can't do, with consequences for their actions, as opposed to pulling rabbits out of the hat. As a viewer, we aren't provided with all the details at the start; in fact, we are thrown right into the mix with a confusing first episode. However, as the show goes on, we learn more about the world and the main cast, with enough questions in our mind to keep us intrigued, while also not leaving us confused. The cast features strong characters with unique personalities, whose motives and relationships we slowly learn more about. Technically, the show is solid, with notably crisp animations and sound direction, turning the quality up in key scenes. The OP by TK, and the ED (by Memai SIREN, prod. by TK) are exquisite, living up to his reputation. To summarize, I recommend watching this show for the unique world-building and visualization on the premise of 'altering memories' strong cast, and a mystery which slowly unravels the bigger picture. ” (English Title: Science Fell In Love, So I Tried to Prove It) Banjos Perspective Must Watch It Ayame Himuro and Shinya Yukimura are scientists dedicated to their craft. But an unforeseen metaphysical variable has entered the equation: love. As scientists, they conclude that the only “true” solution to deciphering their feelings stems from experimentation, with RikeKoi chronicling their scientific venture. Purely a rom-com, this anime has been filled with romance and comedy aplenty. Their different hypotheses lead to heart skips, hilarity, and huge amounts of enjoyment as the two lovebirds realize their connection among the misguided ideas. Better yet, the college setting enwraps the project in a refreshing sense of maturity, and the theme on what exactly is love receives two thumbs-up. And the supporting cast – the regular lady, the love “guru”, the woman who stirs the pot – round out the group and supply their own romantic and comedic edge for increased fun. The artistry isnt the most spectacular around, but its changes to match for laughs or for emotions are duly noted. And yes, perhaps their formulations are not perfect science per se, but its science-y enough (with or without the bear-professor education) to don those touted lab coats. Of course you do, change of question: Remember the early part of Steins;Gate? The part before all that plot bruhaha, where the most exciting thing you got was Okabe and Kurisu banter, in which you decided those two were the best ship ever? Well, here's an anime that is basically that, but in explicit and sadly also in worse. The main premise of Rikei is easily explained: A male and a female scientist like each other very much, but having never watched educational television as a child, never learned to understand their own emotions. As such, once the topic arises, they go full-on Hollywood scientist and seek to prove their mutual love in all kind of scientific and mathematical ways. All this is commented on by another scientist, the audience surrogate/straight man/best girl, who actually is a normal human being and therefore able to show how even in-universe, the main couple‘s behaviour is not normal. Now, on paper, this all sounds very nice, but it quickly runs into trouble: The characters, officially highly-educated scientists, too often behave like total idiots in topics they should understand, asking questions they should know the answer too and taking too long to come up with an obvious solutions. Also, the science often feel much more arm chairy than if it was written by an actual scientist. In short, this is a must-watch for romance lovers, but everyone less into romance, or maybe even interested due to the S;G parallels, should prepare to groan way too often. ” (English Title: Smile Down the Runway) Banjos Perspective Consider It The medium of anime covers a wide range of topics, and Runway de Waratte walks onto this spectrum by highlighting a topic that is foreign to much of the population: professional fashion. Chiyuki Fujito is an aspiring model, Ikuta Tsumura is an aspiring designer, and the two together seek to become the stars they know they can be. On the one hand, the anime has created an interesting project. The fashion premise, as denoted above, already acts as a lure for the viewer, but its steps to curate themes on adversity help with its writing basis. Hardships faced, perseverance needed. Common threads that the main characters struggle with in their tough jobs. Speaking of, Chiyuki and Ikuta are a nice duo, two sides of the same coin that have their own parts to play yet whose intertwined stories strike a solid balance. On the other hand, the project showcases some cracks. Parts of the drama can feel overblown when harsh actions and loud reactions interfere with the overall seriousness of the story at hand. Oddly as well, the music direction, selections, and timings are often overbearing, clouding its scenes with more sound to enact emotional effect at the cost of audience distraction. But with a clear runway to follow and primed arcs to unfold, this one may very well be smiling come the seasons end. Must Watch It “In a season that has everything from beloved sequels to a VRMMO CGDCT and to the tales of a wish-granting toilet ghost, a seemingly boring show with runway modeling as the theme was bound to fly under most people's radar. And unjustifiably so - taking Smile on the Runway's more intense moments into account, it should be able to hold its own against battle shounens when it comes to keeping you glued to the screen. The show follows the journey of Tsumura, an aspiring clothes designer, and Chiyuki, an aspiring runway model, both of whom could never go past the "aspiring" stage until they met each other due to life's circumstances - Tsumura has to choose supporting his large family over getting into designer school, while Chiyuki is half a head shorter than the acceptable height for professional models. Overall, Smile on the Runway looks like it's shaping up to be a nicely balanced slice of life drama with a basic but well-executed premise, more than passable technical aspects, and last but definitely not least for this kind of show - great characters. If you think your seasonal roster could use another slice of life show, then I highly recommend giving it a shot. ” (English Title: Somali and the Forest Spirit) Banjos Perspective Must Watch It In a fictious land teeming with a multitude of environments and strange creatures, Golem is an ancient, sentient robot who oversees his esoteric forest. One day, he spots not a bunny or a wolf but instead a human child named Somali, seemingly abandoned and without hope. Humans no longer exist in this land, so Golem takes it upon himself to find them, to bring Somali back home, beginning the amazing journey of Somali to Mori no Kamisama Each aspect of this project has been nothing less than great thus far. The touching story of this “father” and “daughter” evokes themes of family, time, and life. Beautiful artistry paints the landscapes with deft skill and gorgeous detail. Golem and Somali are sound characters insofar as Golem learns about emotions and Somali grows up from the world around her. Fantastic music allows the weight of the scenes to shine. And the adorableness, the wholesomeness, and the sincerity throughout grant leagues of enjoyment. In total, the spirit and the execution of this anime is as grand as it can be right now, making this show absolutely one of the best of the best this season. Watch It "Somali to Mori no Kamisama is a quaint Iyashikei show that centers on Somali, a human child who lives in a fantastical society where humans have been mostly wiped out or are sought after as meals, and Golem, her unlikely father figure. If I could pinpoint the two things that make the show interesting, its that Somali is as cute as they come and her relationship with Golem is unique and heart-warming. Three episodes in and the show hasn't failed to capitalise on Somalis fascination with the eccentricity of every settlement they visit, often leading to misadventures. Somali is cute in most scenes shes in and dazzles the audience with her boundless curiosity and adoration of her father figure, which makes way for some unique father-daughter scenes thats just interesting to see, to say the least. While they could have made Somali just a kid who only chases things, throws a fit and does nothing else and be done with it, we instead get a child who loves to support her father and tries to help him, as we watch her father fumble bluntly in his effort to care for Somali. This dynamic is honestly one of the selling points of the show, and if you like seeing the charming (mis)adventures of a curious father daughter duo with a relaxing fantastical setting as a background, Somali to Mori no Kamisama is the show for you. ”.

I want to start by saying that this isn't an isolated incident so I'm not just posting about 1 customer, this is a thing that happens frequently. the scenario I go into detail about is, however, the worst it's been for me, and the first time I've ended up in the hospital, so any advice on how to avoid this scenario as a whole would be GREATLY appreciated. Just a bit of background, So I've got a highly sensitive allergy to dander so furry pets are a massive no no for me. I've also had 6 miscarriages in the past and I'm currently on my 7th pregnancy, all healthy so far and this is the furthest I've carried, I'm 23 weeks and 2 days. As you can imagine I'm very worried that every pain that feels anything similar to my previous miscarriages is a bad sign, however, I do try not to worry myself too much and do expect growing pains. Pregnancy has also heightened my allergy sensitivity so whereas before I could be in a room with a dog for 5-10 minutes before I feel effects, and they'd last a day or 2, they now can be triggered within 1-2 minutes and last 3 days minimum. Extra info that is relevant is that I work in a phone repair shop, on my own, it's a small shop with no windows I can open and I have a massive sign on the door covering the whole window explaining that there are to be no dogs including assist dogs & hypoallergenic under any circumstances in the shop at any time due to the technicians highly sensitive allergies. It's bad enough being in a room with a dog, but when I can't open windows, and I'm just stuck in a small room with the dander circulating the air, it only takes around 10 minutes for me to get a tight chest and throat, watery, itchy, swollen eyes and itchy skin. I have in the past and are 100% willing in the future to serve people with dogs outside if they can't come back soon without their dog. I'll take their phone off them outside, do the repair in my shop dog free, take cash payment outside the shop & give them their receipt and phone outside. Winners all round, most people are fine with this. So I'd say on average, 30% of dog owners read my sign, pop their head through the door, ask for a price & pop back later without a dog. Perfect situation. The other 70% of dog owners I serve completely ignore the sign on the door, bring their dog on, either on a lead, in a bag, carry them or whatever and as soon as I say "sorry you're I'm going to have to ask you to take your dog outside, I have severe allergies, I'll happily discuss your phone with you outside but I can't risk it being in this enclosed shop. Of that 70% I'd say 6/10 people go "Oh god yeah sorry. And wait outside. However, there's the odd few come back with excuses like "I'll just be 2 minutes I'm just looking (at cases. I just want to ask a question" I just want to pick my phone up" I can't possibly leave them outside" and my one of my most recent, and favourite "Stop being difficult and serve me" This small amount of time in my shop with their dogs for even a few minutes causes my allergies to flare up and my chest gets tight, my eyes swell, all above symptoms mentioned and they last around 3 days. I want it to be understood that the reason I ended up in hospital wasn't because of a customer refusing to leave (INITIALLY) but partially due to me not seeing the dog, but they did refuse to leave after which only made things worse. When I'm repairing certain devices, I'll sometimes use a liquid adhesive that I don't want to set down mid-repair to serve a customer, and the device set in the wrong position resorting in me having to re-do the repair, so on these occasions, I'll hear the door open, carry on finishing up the repair and say to the customer "I'll be 2 minutes, I'm just finishing up this repair and I don't want to glue to set in the wrong place. The customer always understands and just waits at the counter while I finish, and they're usually waiting no longer than a minute to get served. On this occasion, I was finishing off the repair and the woman is waiting by the counter and unbeknownst to me holding her dog out of my eye line behind the till / counter. It was about 1 minute before I served her. We get talking about her phone, she explains what's going on with it and what she's done, what she believes is may need and I start going through options of what the resolution might be etc. After around 3 minutes of conversation, I feel my cheeks swelling and like they're on fire, my eyes start feeling like they're getting watery and my chest feels tight and I stand up and say "Sorry, have you got a dog. She said yes and I asked her to take it outside as I could already feel bad effects of my allergies and it wasn't worth the risk. She said she just had a few more questions and wouldn't be long, just wanted to drop the phone off and ask about another phone. I said please can you just take your dog out it's already been in here too long. She said she won't be much longer, it's hypoallergenic if that helps. I said it didn't help and she kept trying to ask a couple more questions and I repeatedly had to ask her to leave. She finally did and was in the shop around 5-6 minutes but by then I could already feel my cheeks burn and swell, my eyes felt puffy, itchy and were red, and my chest was tight, my throat was burning and I was coughing like mad. 2 hours of harsh coughing caused me to eventually start coughing up blood and my stomach was in agony, an all too familiar feeling and I was starting to worry. She collected the phone, without her dog but I'd had several customers come in between serving her & me closing saying I looked like crap, asking what happened etc... When I got home I just felt like pure shit & tried to sleep it off, but unfortunately after a 2-hour nap I woke up in the worst pain in my belly I've had this entire pregnancy, I just felt something wasn't right, so I called the hospital, explained the situation and my history and they wanted to see me straight away. After hours of tests and questions THANKFULLY my little one is all good, but I'm not. This has been a very severe allergic reaction and I've been advised to avoid contact with all animals as much as I can. I guess I'm calling all the customers entitled who proclaim they can't possibly be expected to leave their poor fur baby outside for 1-2 minutes, how can I possibly expect that of them? they won't be too long and it's just a little doggy! I have the same reaction to hamsters so using the excuse its small doesn't mean anything to me. I DO understand people see their pets and their babies, and I DO understand that they see they have equal rights, but I do too and I should be able to work in an environment that's safe to me, and my unborn child without worrying about ANOTHER miscarriage. I shouldn't have to feel so crap, so scared and be in so much pain because they can't leave a dog outside for 2 minutes. I can't serve you if I can't breathe or even see you so it's best if we take this outside or you come back later with no dog. I cannot make the sign any clearer, only more blunt which I'm trying to avoid doing because I hate being rude. I think the reason for this post is 1) to rant a little about how disgusted I am that people can be so entitled and see their phone & dog above my own & my unborn child's health, and 2) I'd like advice on how to help avoid this in the future. As a youngster I was not allowed to spend time with anyone outside of the small, very sect-like church fellowship that my parents were a part of. I had one best friend I grew up with who was a wonderful escape and confidant, but otherwise was constantly lectured over having "worldly" friendships and "keeping company" with sinners. Bear in mind I was around 8-12 when this was being drilled into my head. I was a popular kid, and as i moved into junior high and high school I had a lot of boys who asked me on dates and were interested in me. Every time I wanted to do normal teenage things, I had to either sneak out of the house, or make up elaborate lies about what I was doing and where I was in order to just feel like a regular teenager who had friends. I suppose it led me to experiment and try things that were foolish, but certainly not to a degree that differed from any other young teen my age or would get me in legal trouble. Being a natural extrovert, who made friends quickly, it was like being constantly suffocated and burdened with guilt. I would never enjoy myself at the gatherings I would sneak out to, or after school events. I was always jumpy when my phone buzzed or the door opened, or some car drove by. My parents had a habit of going out and searching for me if i was even so much as 30 minutes behind schedule, regardless of whether I let them know or not. One time my mom caught me hanging out with some friends outside the school and when I got home they confiscated my phone and iPod for a whole year. I remember them screaming at me about how disobedient and shameful i was. I would sit there and cry and my dad would tell me to quit blubbering. Over the years it felt like life was an insufferable drama. The church had an endless amount of issues. People were constantly bickering over doctrinal differences and it was the type of fundamentalism where you can get excommunicated or shunned even if you so much as want to go to another church. Although I didn't realize it when I was very small, the church was rapidly haemorrhaging members (unsurprisingly) including much of my extended family (which was very large. and eventually my parents were the only ones from my extended family left in it. Currently they have an absolutely toxic relationship with my grandparents and all my dads siblings as they "betrayed" the church. To add to it. after I turned 19, my closest and only friend in this small church died very suddenly and I was crushed with grief, it left me feeling a sense of isolation and emptiness that I've never experienced before. By this point I had only dated one guy within the church, and he was absolutely horrible. While much of it he probably couldn't help due to taking a high combination of anti-depressant medication and bi-polar medication, it set a terrible precedent for my future relationships. He was a massive bully, put his hands on me a few times when I tried to walk away from an escalating argument, and was intensely paranoid about my past, and without any evidence would be convinced I was cheating on him. Eventually I did dump him. But as I entered my twenties I was a very broken young woman. The church environment was also really awful in terms of female friendships. I'm sure we all have experienced a bit of "mean girls" syndrome when we are young, but the women within the church were about 5 times worse than any immature behaviour I ever experienced. Not only was there rampant gossip circulating constantly, but very often you were judged severely on your moral character. even if that so-called moral flaw was an insignificant and passing comment. There were a lot of jealous women in this church, many of them ended up marrying men who had cheating tendencies or porn addictions. and many of those men had previously asked me out, which compounded the dislike for me. It's an odd experience to live 3, 000 miles away and know that a bunch of girls hate you just because you might attract the attention of other men. During the years between 21-25 I dated 3 other men who were undoubtedly, very poor prospects in terms of committed partnerships. 2/3 of them cheated on me with their exes. and this information was spread like wildfire both times around the world. People in Switzerland and Australia knew about my pain. The other relationship ended because of cheating as well, but primarily because of his porn addiction. at that point I was 25, and he was 36. and the realization that this church harboured so many damaged individuals was finally the straw that broke the camels back. When I finally took a good, hard look around me, I realized that I had allowed myself to bend to every single persons whim, and that I hadnt ever really prioritized my own needs. The idea of thinking about myself was intensely uncomfortable. I was always told that the moment you think for yourself instead of for God, you have failed. I had a break down. Looking back I can see how I teetered quite badly on the edge of potentially doing something irreversible to myself, it was a very dark time. I have always been very proactive so I immediately visited my family doctor who referred me to a psychiatrist and I was able to unload and unravel a massive amount of backlogged feelings that had been suppressed for nearly two decades. I had no idea the gravity of the situation until I stopped mid-session and my therapist was rubbing her eyes. She just looked at me and said; i'm amazed you are still here my dear. I don't know how you've managed to rationalize all of this on your own, but if you don't mind me saying so, I'm truly floored that you are still standing at this point, and my heart aches for you because those important formative years required professional help the moment you were told that you weren't enough, so dealing with an additional 8 years of self hatred must have been a terrible toll on your mind and body. That moment was so important to me, I remember the physical feeling of weight being lifted from my back, the first person to truly listen to me without jumping down my throat with religion or telling me about how God must be punishing me because of all the disappointments I dealt with. She offered me a new interpretation of God, one that didn't micro analyze scripture and create rules out of nothing. Granted, I was feeling fed up with religion at that point but it helped remove this anger I felt towards the movement. I started dating outside the church at 25, and was faced with an endless stream of disappointing dates. mostly because I was a beginner at that sort of thing and I think vulnerable people can be sniffed out quite easily by users and narcissists. But eventually did find myself in a couple short term relationships (5 months each) which left me more fulfilled and cared for than I'd ever felt in the past decade. I started to recognize my successes, I had started my own side business which my parents had critiqued horribly as they thought women should just wait to get married and make babies. NOT have a career. I hadn't really celebrated the face I'd been published in two books and a magazine. or that despite being influenced to never attend college, I learned my own skills and found success against the odds. Still, I find myself alone in love though, and sometimes I worry thats what it will always be for me. I see all these happy groups of girls going on nights out as I nervously tag along with my small group of friends that I've developed over the last couple years, trying to mimic their joy, to fake it until I make it. to unravel any remaining conditioning that taught me that having fun meant you were dancing with the devil. I see how happy the college aged kids are, 21 and free, sparkling, supported, happy, full of hope. For a while I felt ripped off. I wish I had found my tribe earlier. I wish I had been able to ask for what I wanted from men earlier. But life is what it is, I didn't ask for this upbringing. this detour. and even though I'm sitting here now blinking back tears, I know that my purpose at the very least will be to save my younger brothers from this same fate. Even if I don't get the opportunity to become a mother, and have a loving husband, and build my own family. that I will never let someone I love face the same shackles that I was taught to accept. If I couldn't be my own best friend, at least I can be someone else's. But all the same, I still long for real love. TL;DR My religious upbringing has left me as an adult who hates herself, and can't sustain a good relationship. It's hard to know how to surround myself with the right people at this age. I don't know what to do next.

What the deal was wasnt clear, but it had cost them more than theyd thought possible. It had cost them friends, and lovers, and in the end, each other. And the thing that slept below the hills, that dreamt so loud it made ripples on the surface, wanted one thing: blood. Their journals were not clear on when the deal was made, but theyd been giving the thing below the hills what it wanted for years until it had grown to be too much. It had wanted one last gift. One last gift and it promised it would finally leave them be. It was to be my Grandfather. They were to go up to the caves at the top of Blackrock Hills and make their way to the centre, where Artie would slit his throat and lay him finally to rest. The decision had taken them days. They both wrote extensively about wanting it to be them so that the other could live a full life, about how they had to stop it somehow, and how this was the only way. But something happened when they were meant to make the decision. Whatever mistake my Grandfather made meant he never returned to the Well and so his journals were left uncompleted. But it was clear: it was meant to be my Grandfather. Whether he deliberately pushed Artie down the Well, or whether there was a change of heart on Arties behalf, we didnt know. What we did know was that the Well was directly above a stream that ran through the heart of the hills, deep underground, a stream that worked its way through a cave system so intricate it was like a mess of capillaries and veins. When Amy read the last of the journals, and we both realised what had passed between the two of them, she spoke bitterly. “I knew it. ” “Knew what? ” “That a Voynich, that your family, put themselves first. ” I grew defensive. “We dont know that. All we know is that it was meant to be my Grandfather, not what happened after-“ “Are you stupid? ” “What? ” “At least I know about my family. We might lie or cheat or steal but we do it for each other, the people we love, I know that - but you, you have no idea about any of it. ” I could see her building up to something, as if some storm was growing inside her. “Well now whatever it is, is threatening my family. The people I love. Whatever it is down there, whatever it wants – Im going to find out. ” And with that, she stood up, scattering the loose pages of the journals around her feet, and left. I was in shock for a moment, thinking about why this had happened. I imagined the way her mother must have talked about Artie, her mothers grief she must only be able to see glimpses of as if through a keyhole, her whole childhood, whole life, knowing that it had to do with Arties friend but never knowing what. And now finding out that it was because of a coward and a liar, and seeing that cowards flesh-and-blood defend his actions when he knew nothing of what those actions actually meant. I wanted to apologise. I ran after Amy, but she was already gone, and had left footprints in the wet earth leading up the Hills. I followed, trying to run but each step made my feet sink deeper and deeper into the mud. I could feel the muscles in my legs begin to tire, and just when I thought Id have to stop, and Id lose her, I saw the opening to a cave. The cave. I didnt hesitate and went straight in, shouting her name, crouching to fit through the tighter squeezes. I was going too fast, though, and before long I realised that Id taken a couple of turns on instinct. That I had no idea where I was. Not only that, but Id lost Amy. Somewhere along the way, with all these twists and turns, Id lost her. When I tried to turn back it was clear that I was lost. Completely, and utterly lost. There was a light that seemed to come from within the reflection on the rocks, as if in that mirror-world everything was illuminated by some ghostly glow. In turn, the glow from the reflection cast a dim light over the tunnels I was in. The rock was wet to the touch, and as I progressed further and further in the cave began to shrink, like the tapering of a throat, and I found myself bending more and more to fit through gaps. I couldnt go back. I tried calling for Amy, but my voice echoed hopelessly until it faded out – mocking me. There was another sound, in between the echoes. Something like a scrambling, and a panting far away. I had an image of the stag following our scent, some drowned thing soaked to core and rotting, stalking me. I could see it now, all sinew and soil, relentless, hungry. I tried to push it from my mind. I kept on. Whenever Id press myself against a rock to squeeze past, or have to crouch under a low hanging ceiling Id see a reflection just for a second only millimetres away, except, it wouldnt be my face, but the face of someone else; distorted, pale, gaunt. My Grandfather, my father, Artie, Dot, and then faces I didnt recognise: a boy who had my face but Amys nose, a woman with a scar that split her face in two. And each time I grew closer to the rock faces would leer at me, examine me with their dead eyes. Once or twice I was sure I saw Amy. But I couldnt have. Just when I thought that I must have found myself in some huge loop, that I would be stuck underground for the rest of my life, endlessly stalking these caves, seeing the faces of everyone Id ever known staring back at me, I stumbled out- And onto the shore. In front of me there lay a vast and black ocean, shored by grey slate that burst from the earth at severe angles. As with the cave, I couldnt tell where the light was coming from, only that I could see well enough to make out a small boat on shore. And in that boat: Artie, and Amy. I made my way down the slate, cautiously, testing each step with my weight before committing. They hadnt seen me yet, and whilst I was sure they werent watching I bent down and picked up a long, hard piece of stone. I thought, if needed, if Amy had somehow been turned like Artie, I could at least try and use this to fend them off. It was a dark thought, and Im not proud of it, but the feeling of the stone in my hand at least gave me some sort of comfort. But even when they saw me they did not react, and instead seemed entirely focused on their own, private conversation. In between the sound of the waves, in that lull when one crested and smashed into the shore and another began to swell behind it, I could hear something in the distance; something like voices, screaming and bellowing over each other so that it became one awful sound. But it was only present for a moment at a time, and each time Id try to tune in to it a wave would crash, and Id lose it. When I grew close enough to see their faces, I slipped the stone into my pocket. Just in case. I finally reached the boat, at the end of a stone pier. It was a small, black craft that bobbed aimlessly in the water. Artie sat at the front, holding an oar in each hand. He looked to me. “You look just like your Grandfather. ” I watched a private smile play over his face and couldnt help but see Amy in the expression. “Well, whatre you waiting for? Get in. ” His voice was deep and rasping, the consequence of years of drink and smoking no doubt, but there was no malice there. If anything it was the same tone parents use with their children; caring, impatient. I looked to Amy. She nodded. And so I got into the craft, sitting on the only other bench, so that I was pressed against Amy and facing Artie. I could see his face properly now, all the crags and trenches of old age, the yellowing of his cornea, the way his teeth were stained a slight brown. He cracked a grin, and it seemed like every single one of his teeth was at its own angle. And, hunching over and yanking his shoulders back in one motion, he began to row us out to sea. As we rowed further and further out, the shouting got louder, and, in the distance I could just make out what seemed to a huge, dark pillar. Dark, and crooked. The boat seemed just about to capsize at any moment, but each time I thought a huge black wave would sweep us all off the deck the boat would bob just above it, and wed keep moving forward. My hands grew clammy. I didnt want to think of what lay below us, what things lived and died in the depths of this underground sea. Sometimes, a way away, the surface would break as if something was coming up for air. As we grew closer to the crooked thing it came into focus: a tower. I could make out tiny figures running to and fro, and realised that the crooked tower was ringed by dozens of wooden construction platforms, which went in a spiral all the way to the top – like the slide on a helter-skelter. The thing was staggeringly huge, but I had no frame of reference to compare it too, only that it emerged from the water and rose up as far as I could see. Artie spoke up. “Babel. ” I raised an eyebrow. “Sorry? ” We were growing closer now, and I could see that in fact the figures were running up and down the structure, grabbing pieces of rotten, black wood from the base and sprinting their way to the top, somewhere so high I could barely make it out. “The Tower of Babel. ” Artie said. “This sea keeps rising, and they keep building. If not-“ And as if on cue, a short woman at the bottom bent to grab a piece of the platform that had just been submerged and something grabbed her wrist. She struggled for a second or two, screaming in some incomprehensible tongue before she was pulled head-first under the waves. The builders around her didnt even look, and kept shouting in their own, private languages, hauling wood from just above the water to the very top. Amy gave a start, spoke up, and the boat rocked. “Why dont we help them? Offer some a chance to get off, to come with us? ” I didnt even know where we were going, let alone trust any of them enough to offer them a space in this already-cramped boat. Artie shook his head. “They couldnt understand you even if we tried. Theyre cursed to never understand each other, no matter how hard they try, to perpetually build up and up and up to escape the rising water - surrounded by people, but alone. Alone, and scared, and trying to comprehend all” he gestured up, to the tower, to the dark above it “this. ” There was another scream, and all I could see was the wake of another builder pulled into the water. A small pool of white froth, then nothing. “Some say we once all spoke the same language, and using that true language we tried to build a tower to God. They say this is His punishment. ” Amy looked to him, and the way she hung on his words was like she was making up for all their lost time; she was a child again, at his feet by the fire, in awe at his age and grace. “Im not sure I believe that entirely, but theyve got to have done somethin to end up here, I suppose. ” “Is that where were going? ” Artie laughed. A black, harsh sound. “Not for you, boy. Maybe at the end of it all youll find yourself washed up on the Tower, but for now, youre needed somewhere else. ” We adjusted our course slightly, and began to move past the Tower. The screams and bellows began to fade. I turned to watch it disappear; the thousands of people desperately trying to build it, the way it curved and bend under its own weight, the platforms like a wet skeleton, the way it let out a thunderous creak every now and again as if its very core was splintering. “Our families made a pact with forces down here. Many did. Maybe it was after the original Tower fell. Maybe it was much later. All I know is that whatevers down here needs things from us. Offers gifts in return. ” His eyes glazed over for a second. Regret? A memory? “Its easy to get carried away. ” A scream near the top, someone carrying a huge plank staggered – the others couldnt wait, barged past, and they fell into the sea below. Into the jaws of something waiting. Something so large that when it moved it pulled the surface of the water after it, and for a second there was a huge, aqueous crater. For a second, I thought I could see a familiar stoop, just above eye level. Even though we were far away I was convinced that for a second Id seen Dot, but he was swallowed by the crowd before I could be sure. “Was that... Dot? ” Artie looked unfazed. “The man wasnt a saint, Max. I dont know, is the truth. Could be. ” I tried to see Dot again, but there was nothing. “Im sure that was... I mean – it looked like... ” Artie looked past me. “Im sorry it had to be like this, Max. ” I could tell that he meant it. “Im sorry about Dot drowning. He was a friend to your father, I know. It wasnt my choice, to do what we did to him. It had to have you here, you see. You have to do this. ” “Do what? ” “Youll see. And Amy, you know whats to come, and you think youre right? ” She paused for a moment, bit her lip. Nodded. “Alright. Alright. Theres no dissuading you, I suppose. ” She shook her head. “You know your ancestors tried to plot this place once, Max? A long, long time ago. Wrote it all down, but once the manuscript reached the surface it turned to nonsense. Gibberish. ” He paused, thinking but still rowing, his body at a steady rhythm. “Nothing down here makes much sense on the surface. Try explaining that-” he pointed to the Tower of Babel; to that endless, crooked tower “to anyone on the surface. There are very few who could understand it. ” I thought on this for a while, and as the Tower faded from view I could just start to make out a distant shore. Amy must have seen it too because she went a little pale, and I felt her body stiffen against mine. She was afraid. “Whatever happened between me and your Grandfather, you know its forgiven? ” He was saying this as much to me as to Amy. “In the scheme of things we were so young. We were drunk, and arrogant, and both of us couldnt bear the thought of a world without the other. We were meant to come down here, together, to meet the thing beneath the Hills and face it. But we argued, he wanted it to be him, I wanted it to be me. ” We were growing closer to the shore now, and I could tell Amy was nervous next to me, she was chewing her lip, running her hands through that bird-nest of hair, making silent words with her lips. “Whatever happened, happened. That was our turn. Now its yours. ” And we disembarked from the small boat, onto this new shore, and said our goodbyes to Artie. Something had passed between him and Amy, Im sure of it. All this time and Id have thought theyd have more to say to each other but they communicated in small looks and tilts of the head. He furrowed his brow, raised his eyebrows, and she nodded. She was sure. (He wasnt) He studied me for a long time, rubbing his jaw. I felt for a moment something piercing behind those eyes, something vicious and with the raw intelligence of a trapped animal. I felt him look past me, through me, into me. I did not know if he was seeing my Grandfather, or me – whatever it was, he didnt entirely trust me. Not yet. This all had the texture of a dream, and for a second I thought maybe it was, some fever dream Id wake up from in a weeks time, but a cold salt wind rolled off the water and buffeted me and I knew this was all real. Happening. Even though Ill dream of this, of this underground sea, and the crooked tower, and the great beasts, and Artie, for the rest of my life - I know it was real. It had to be. Slowly, wordlessly, Artie began to paddle back out into that vast sea, lifting his cap to us as he left. Amy squeezed my hand, so tight I thought a knuckle might pop and then let go. My hand twitched slightly, tried to find hers again for just a second but itd gone. She looked at me intensely, the same way her Grandfather just had, before walking ahead. “Keep up. ” I jogged to keep up with her fast pace, and I found myself slightly out of breath as we reached the top of the spit of rock. The tower was inaudible now, and all I could hear was the crash of the waves, and my breath. As we climbed up we drew closer and closer to what seemed to be two doorways hewn into the stone. There was no door, only a faint, flickering light that indicated there was something inside each of them. When we reached the two doorways Amy gave my hand one last squeeze. Looked at me as if she was memorising every last detail of my face. There was something else there, though. Was she scared? She turned away, and entered her own doorway. Still, to this day, I do not know what Amy saw in there. I dont think I ever will: all I know is that when I entered later, to do what I had to do, her cheeks would be wet with tears, and there would be blood on the stone. I entered my doorway, and found myself in a round, black chamber. A chamber made from something like obsidian, jagged and reflective and slick and somehow alive. The thing that dreams under the Hills reached into me. It reached into me, crawled up my spine and into my brain and spat black images onto my eyelids. I staggered under the weight of it, finding myself on my knees, head spinning, mouth dry and tasting like tar. I could see, on every wall in front of me, on every surface, hundreds of images, my father, my Grandfather, his father and his father before him, and people I somehow knew were my sons, and daughters, and their sons and daughters, until I could see my family stretching out for hundreds and hundreds of years either side of me, and I could see them all sin. I could see them all maim and lie and cheat and steal and beg and fight and hurt and wail and I could see it all as if it was happening this very second, and I could feel it, immediate, as if it had always been there. Images flickered on every available surface, on my eyelids, the walls, the palms of my hands. Scenes I could recognise: My Grandfather pushing Artie down the Well as they argued, pushing his chest and shouting over and over it should be me it should be me - my Grandfather a week later beating some poor man senseless because he looked like his old friend and he couldnt bear to see his face, the grief that began to live in the silence and the whistle of the kettle Scenes I couldnt: Someone who looked just like me, but far, far in the past, robbing a man in a back-street, cutting first his purse and then his stomach, and then his throat when he can see that he recognises him, leaving him to bleed out amongst the stench of shit and dirty water And I knew then that endlessly either side of me was suffering, and I could see my children who I did not know yet but already loved, suffering, and the thing that dreamt below the Hills offered me a way out. It was simple. All it needed was blood. It was the way it had always been. My Grandfather had been greedy. Wanted too much. The thing had only asked for something in return, and had been denied it. I could see Amy in her chamber, semi-comatose like me, the weight of generations bearing down on her. I could feel the piece of stone in my pocket, long and hard, and the thing showed me the image of Amys head – wet with blood, and how it was only that simple. It showed me Amy, dead. It had made it clear to me. It only wanted one thing. One thing and I could leave this place shedding memories like snakeskin, free of the weight of all of this- One thing and I could put this all to rest. One movement, precise and painless, and all of this grief, all of this horror could just fade away. Thoughts played in my mind, memories played across the obsidian surfaces like images projected on a screen; Maybe the reason nothing makes sense down here is because it shouldnt. Maybe its not only my right to kill her, but my duty. I tested the weight of the stone in my hand. I imagined how easy it would be, how small and fragile her skull must be beneath her skin. I thought of the vision Id had; the back of her head slick with blood. But my mind kept going, kept working, threw up more images. I saw her hunched in the rain outside my house. I saw the way she confessed she knew Gutter, as if shed revealed something ugly and real inside her. I saw her limp. The way she saw her Grandfather. The way she saw me. And I knew then that the thing under the Hills lied. It had lied to my Grandfather, and to his father, and to me. It did not offer any solution to this. It didnt have any, because there was none. And whilst it would never leave our families alone, whilst it would always dwell here, dream here, it would not make me a murderer. It would always find a way to offer a choice. That's how it has always been, and how it will always be. I just had to make the right one. Slowly, I forced my way to my feet, turned away from the images playing across every surface. I left my chamber, and walked to Amys. Every step sent fresh memories, fresh regrets, fresh wounds racing through me. I gritted my teeth. Kept going. She was sat in the corner, pale, wide-eyed, watching the entrance. When she saw me she flinched, for a second, but I held my hands up: empty. Her nose was bleeding, and it had dripped from her chin onto the floor. She must have taken a fall when she came in, when the weight of the memories of hundreds of years hit her all at once. She was bruised, and bleeding. But she was alive. And so together we left the chambers, climbed back down the stone shore and walked until we found an empty boat, and we rowed together back across that vast sea, and past the Tower, and went back through those wet tunnels, and I followed her the whole way – and as we got closer and closer to the surface we began to see light. Real light. I know now the thing under the Hills cant be sated. It will always be there. And it will be there for my children, and my childrens children, and their children in turn. And it will offer them a choice the way it always has, and it will promise pleasure, or riches, or love. And they will have to reckon with it the same way I did; will have to reckon with the mistakes of their forefathers, with the knowledge that our spirits will not rest, with the knowledge of all the grief and suffering that has passed and that is to come, and with the crooked Tower and that vast underground sea. But I hope when the thing beneath the Hills shows them my mistakes, and my fathers, and my Grandfathers, they will at least know one thing, no matter what they choose: They are not alone. They never have been. We made our way out of the cave-mouth, and collapsed into the light. We spent the next few days in the houses by the Well. We slept, ate, chopped wood to make fire, organised our Grandfathers journals, hunted rabbits, made stew. The forest was quiet – at rest. I brought it up one morning, as we gathered water from a nearby brook. “You and Artie – in the boat. He asked you if you were sure... Sure of what? ” Amy looked pained, as if she didnt want to say what was next: “Its nothing. It was nothing. ” “Amy? ” She rolled her eyes: fine then. “When I got to the boat he told me about the choice you had to make. The choice you had to make to atone for your Grandfather. ” “You knew? ” I thought of how Id felt the weight of the stone in my hand. “I knew what it would ask you. ” “And you knew what Id do, right? ” She shook her head. “I had a hunch. ” The brook chattered away happily to itself. She spoke again. “I trusted you, I guess. ” And as we made our way back, content and in comfortable silence, through the trees and the muted morning light, I noticed that the soil was no longer waterlogged. The storm had passed. And the earth beneath our feet was dry. x.
Free Full Growing pains au lait. Is she running in the same street/neighborhood in the video for I'm Yours. She was so adorable! I miss that show and shows like that. YA'LL ALREADY KNOW WHO BROUGHT ME HERE LMAO HELLO. So I just watched Weathering With You after some managed expectations. I was really worried because after the mass success of Your Name, this movie is put into a very difficult position. It can potentially become a "format" of Your Name like movies where instead of creating individual unique pieces we essentially get gorgeous tourism ads for Tokyo guided by young romance with supernatural mystery for conflict. Reviews also gave me some red flags, positive reviews tend to only speak of the movie in a very simplistic sense like "it's really pretty" or "it's super exciting" and negative reviews criticized the writing for not being as good as Your Name which is the focal point of this post. But oh man I actually liked it more than Your Name and I feel like it distinguishes itself from Your Name as well. The only issue in regards to Your Name is that the art style, it feels like if you took concept art and screenshots from both films and showed them without context you would not be able to tell they were from two different movies. Aside from that though it's still incredibly gorgeous, it just isn't very unique tbh. That aside, this first part of my analysis for the movie is actually spoiler free but under the assumption you have already watched Your Name, so spoilers for Your Name. If you watched neither film then get off reddit and watch one of them you absolute heathen. Now there are many things that make a movie "better" or "not as good" the style and genre tend not to adjust this. From the trailers you can probably tell that Weathering With You is going for a darker tone, especially when you know guns are hella illegal in Japan but I digress. Regardless of Makoto's very deliberate way of saying "it's like Your Name but darker, we have a gun, but we also have Radwimps" that won't change the actual quality of the movie. We have movies with dramatic flaring themes, melancholy bittersweet themes, that isn't the thing that makes one movie superior over another. Also as a side note I read some reviews saying this movie is actually funnier and lighter which I can only see as a flaw with American viewers, in the same way everyone thought the Chihiro crying while eating onigiri scene was funny in Spirited Away. What makes this movie better to me is that the themes are larger and more critical. Your Name is about a lot of things, but it's ultimately a personal story between two people growing up in vastly different worlds, learning about the craziness of life, even Mitsuha standing up to her father to save everyone from the meteor is about her character growth rather than any underlying problems with Japanese traditionalism (at least not to a critical degree) Weathering With You expands it's themes far beyond just the primary protagonists. Yes of course we got some adorable romance, but the themes of this movie ask more of the entire world as well. How is the world responsible for the actions of these characters, how does the world change because of these characters and their choices? In a sense the characters are not just the protagonists, but the entire world (or Tokyo at least. Your Name of course has a lot to say about the world, but the world doesn't have a character arc. SPOILERS AHEAD: By the end of Your Name, the choices Taki and Mitsuha make in a sense have already been set in stone. Life is going to come in crazy ways, you cannot change that, so might as well embrace it and grow as people. I read a youtube comment that said "Your Name is about finding love in destiny" but "Weathering With You is about fighting destiny to find love" and that is the thing that makes this movie resonate far more with me personally and is where even though I believe this is very subjective, that it's still something worth saying. Hodoka is faced with a choice, and within the heat of love and intense thrill of action movie shenanigans you can forget that Hodoka decided to flood all of Tokyo to save this girl. If phrased like "I'd rather flood all of fucking Tokyo than lose this girl" it's almost cynically comedic. This future was not inevitable, Tokyo could remain as Tokyo, the sun could absolutely exist and shine down on the world without any drawbacks except the loss of a girl that most of us would never even see in our lifetimes. But this says a lot more the more I thought about it, especially applying it to all kinds of real world context, knowing what Japan is going through, knowing what America is going through, knowing what I myself went through. Japan is a collectivist society, prioritizing the community over the individual, and are even willing to sacrifice someone for that. While America is technically not collectivist, I still have my own personal anecdotes in my own life. Often people are sacrificed for a convenient status quo, people are unwilling to denounce the societal norms to help someone. I myself was put into gender roles and now as a trans girl I wish I could punch my middle school teacher in the face for telling me to "man up" rather than oh Idk fucking punishing my bullies or getting me away from them like the entire staff says they will do at every "don't bully" school gathering. But even with this beef, I know why my teacher said this. He will have to denounce his very traditional centered mindset that says "you should get thicker skin" rather than "you should be kinder and not bully people" a mindset that should he reject would place him in a difficult spot in society and a difficult spot in his own personal beliefs. It's easier to say "just man up" because it's what millions of people learn in life, that the world won't change because of your desires, you must be stronger to not let it hurt you. Should he denounce this belief, he has to perhaps denounce the majority of people in life who have taught him the same lesson. So here we are, giving up a "young adolescent love" for a sunny Tokyo, where the flowers can actually bloom, where it's warm, where the world works the way it's meant to. Everybody is happy, and not some kind of bullshit happiness but a genuine happiness. It's not impure or full of lies, it's a real happiness that has no drawbacks for everyone except the few who are sacrificed. Even so, even so, we still side with Hodoka's choice, because we believed that this sunny sky is just not worth it. We don't want to denounce other people's happiness to say their's isn't as good as ours, but we don't want to denounce our own happiness. The world is not worth giving up love, we'd rather everyone suffer than to put all the burden on one person's shoulder. And it's transcendental in how Hina represents the sky, and the sky affects the mood of the world. In other words, Hina may well represent the world, and at the start we see that Hodoka may actually find fun in the rain. The world is worth defying for love, because that is what makes the world beautiful, but the movie pulls no punches in making sure we don't understand the implications of those actions. It's going to hurt, Tokyo is a new place now, and it was probably very painful to adjust to a new lifestyle, but we don't have to accept that status quo. Our individual desires may well be bigger than the world, everyone's individual desires may well be bigger than the collective we are, in other words we know that our own choices matter. and that is why I like this movie better than Your Name, but I'm sleepy and had a bit to drink so I'll leave it at that since I can see my writing becoming more and more drunk philosophy. Final note, I like this movie simply because it's more critical of the world. It does not cross the line of "elitist oh hur hur phones are bad we should live in trees" but it respects the audience as humans who are simply born but try our best anyway. But it doesn't pull punches either, cause Tokyo is literally underwater from these choices, but we learn not to regret it. EDIT: Read some comments and it definitely feels like this movie has a more divided audience. I myself was able to empathize with the character's circumstances right from the start, but I realize that can't be applied to one thing of notice which I just generally disagree on are the plot holes in the story. Mainly that they don't seem like plot holes but rather just aspects of the world that are left vague. The themes of "you get sunlight if you sacrifice her" is first and foremost the focus of this story, in fact just because we are so used to this kind of concept we hardly need any setting up for it. Everything else is just left up to the imagination, is this the will of a god, are there water spirits, is it a metaphysical representation of nature? The only thing we need to know is that there is a consequence for the sunny sky. Also addressing the incompetent police, it feels very appropriate since Japanese laws treat minors with much more leniency than in America, and overall a lot of story beats feel appropriate considering Japanese culture as context. While I usually don't like saying "context is important" since a good story should also be able to stand on it's own universally, this story is dead set in Tokyo where children are more likely to be killed by stress than the cops. EDIT 2:This is more philosophical than strictly critical evaluation of the film but I feel like the phrasing of "choosing between 1, 000, 000 people and 1 girl" is misleading in terms of what the movie is really trying to on a surface level that is what Hodoka's choice seems like, but when we watch the movie and view it through a societal lens, we see the far more demanding questions being city benefits off the suffering of an individual, and we know that Hina is suffering when she was sacrificed, Hodoka is not choosing between one and one million, he's choosing between"A city that will be evil to rest under the sun" and "A city that would rather be flooded than be evil" The city that will be evil to rest under the sun is willing to put someone through a terrible pain for everyone else's happiness, and it can act under the pretense of "one vs a million" but because the city is going to benefit from killing this one girl, the city holds a collective responsibility of this life. And this makes a lot of sense when taking into account how Japan thinks, because it's very much willing to sacrifice one girl for the sake of everyone else. I mean the sunshine girl was shit that actually happened, and that is one of the less offensive cultural atrocities in Japanese history. Yes on a surface level, it may just seem like Hodoka decided it'd be worth choosing a girl over an entire city, but Hodoka didn't choose that, he chose to value what he wanted over what the city wanted for him. I'm sure most of us would like to be one thing, but are perhaps forced to be something else because the world demands it of us. How many of us want to be artists and are probably taking classes in programming (the most soul sucking yet high paying job in the world) In Japan it's even more specific, people have to give up having relationships for the sake of their careers. That mindset is one of the reasons why Japan is one of the unhappiest first world countries in the world. WWY is saying that "we shouldn't give up love for the community" perhaps in the real world it's not so drastic, it's not like Tokyo shifting it's work culture to include more love and happiness would cause it to sink, but even if does cause it to sink wouldn't you say it's still worth doing? It's not like Hodoka's choice is a selfish choice, his choice is a statement, if he can love, then everyone can choose to live under the rain for love. and despite everything, Tokyo still continues to live even when it's underwater, the world will change but we won't give up the things we love, even if it floods then so be it. Weathering is the process of decaying, over time cliff sides and mountains slowly decay, that's a neat pun isn't it? Choosing to decay with you, running into the apocalypse with you.
